stevegrab
Um, no. I got this from your quote: I guess I locked in on the "even" in "who's even available". As if to imply some urgency because all of the guys whose names we know are already spoken for. And that anyone else would be a reach. A sentiment that you later confirmed. My point is. There's a decent chance that you will not know much about the guy they hire and that, despite that, he may actually be a very qualified OC. Mostly because, like the rest of us, you're not an NFL executive who spends all day every day talking to coaches and other execs. That's really it. You're making a good point, but it isn't one that many NFL fans want to hear, especially those who think they are well informed. To them the well known (popular name) guys are all that counts. When somebody is hired that they've never heard of or don't know much about they're asking "so what do we know about this guy?". I think the next 5-10 years will see an increase in newer faces in NFL coaching/GM positions. The game is changing and the old experienced known guys will not be the top candidates. Just like the "Cowher or Gruden" talk, people want to feel comfortable with the guys who are selected, and unknown guys don't do that. Mike McCarthy's last gig before taking over the Packers was a one year stint with the Niners as the OC, where he led them to a 32nd ranking in both total and passing yards. I'm guessing there had to be "better" names out there in '06 when the Packers chose him as their HC. Todd Haley may or may not be the best fit for Chicago, but if he's not the choice, there will be people saying "I can't believe they hired <blank> when Todd Haley was out there!"
