The Colts need to release Peyton Manning.

As much as it pains me to write it, it is true. I've thought a lot about it. There is no way they should pay him a $28 million dollar roster bonus in March. Not with what happened this year. It's too risky. They should thank Peyton for all his years of service, and let him become a free agent. Then they should draft Andrew Luck and start over.

I think something regarding this issue is the main reason they cut the polians. Guess we'll see soon enough which side irsay is on.

I think that had more to do with Bill Polian heading towards retirement, and Irsay was not convinced that Chris Polian was the right man for the job.

And then he needs to sign with the Niners! Assuming the guy has a clean bill of health, that would be amazing. Smith has certainly taken some steps in the right direction this year but, they're winning despite him more than because of him. He's not screwing up, but that's because they're handling him with kid gloves, hence all the FGs. Something that I fear will be their undoing vs the sorts of teams they're going to have to get through in the play-offs.

So, thanks to A Smith and let Kaeperneck learn behind one of the greatest QBs in the history of the game.

Manning, on the other hand, gets a team with a great D, a young and improving O-line, some decent playmakers around him and to play in nice weather, which is the next best thing to a dome.

And you're probably right, this is how it will go down. No pressure Mr. Luck!!!

Gonna be fun to see where Peyton goes......

It probably does make the most sense for the team, as tough as the situation would be.

However, I will say congratulations to the team that gets him. Unlike Brett Favre, I think Peyton Manning's best attribute is his mind for the game, and that is the last thing to go. If he is able to get healthy, I certainly would bet against him having more elite season's to come.

All of that said, I also believe that Andrew Luck is the most NFL ready QB that I have ever seen. His arm accuracy and the zip he gets on the ball are impressive. He also appears to have a mind for the game, like Manning.

It could be a win-win for the Colts and whoever ends up with Manning, but, I do agree it is the right move for them to make.

I'm a Colts' fan as well, though for sure not to the extent you are, and I agree completely. Adios Peyton. The city/team owes him nothing except the paycheck(s) he's gotten over the years. They definitely need to rebuild starting now.

They have got to get rid of Caldwell though regardless. Dude is the worst head coach in the NFL.

While Caldwell may be bad, and I can see reasons why Colts fans want to get rid of him, no way is he the worst coach in the NFL. Have you seen some of the terrible things happening under Pat Shurmur?

If Manning is healthy and can play then the Colts shouldn't get rid of him...however that is a big IF, and even bigger when there is 28 million attached to it...I am all for seeing players spend their entire career for an organization, but this one does seem like it would make sense to part ways, sad as it might be

That's the problem. I don't see the Colts having any idea if Manning is healthy enough to play by March 8. That's 64 days away. And I don't think the Colts should risk $28 million and the future of their cap. They already took a bath on Manning this year due to their sheer stupidity of not having Manning take a physical before they signed this contract.

Yep....you hit the nail on the head. The Colts will not know if he is healthy enough to play by March 8th, no matter what Peyton or the Doctors are telling them. This is an extremely tough situation all-around for the Colts.

Is your average Colt fan on board with releasing Manning, or would it kill fan support (lost season ticket sales, etc)?

I agree 100%...i used the IF for a reason to point out how risky, and yes there is no way to know if he will be able to play...can't take that kinda of chance with 28 million

Ticket sales will be fine. Still a waiting list to be a season ticket holder. But this will be a divisive issue.

Actually with how it is playing out I think it is the easiest of all situations that they could have been presented with...well short of them saying that medically he will never play again...I don't think anyone, fan or not will be able to fault them if and when they part ways.

And the price will not be as high for whomever picks him up as a FA. He won't be cheap, but there's no history with him and another team. They won't be the team that low-balled their franchise QB. So, where it will cost Indy that much, others can build in some assurances regarding playing time and health.

Fans are on board.

Bold move, no doubt. I'm sure there would be manifest caterwauling from the media about the lack of loyalty from IND and the disrespect shown, but the NFL is first and foremost a business, and this would be a good business decision. Manning has made enough money in IND to buy and furnish a small country, so the disrespect angle is complete hogwash, but we'll hear it no doubt.

Manning gets to try to win one more ring as a hired gun, and IND can rebuild around a hopeful up-and-coming future star QB. Win-win.

Nice loyalty towards your franchise QB that before this injury never missed a game.

Sarcasm, or what would you do in this situation?

Do you gamble that Manning could be healthy enough and trade the pick for Luck? Pretty easy to see how that backfires, and then you could be stuck with no franchise QB...

Tie up a huge portion of your team's cap in 2 QBs, leaving money on your bench rather than the field where you need it? Pretty easy to see how that backfires too...

You can't trade Manning with all that money due, especially since that would be conceding that they're not sure if he could even play a few more years if they're willing to let him go...

So that pretty much leaves this 1 possibility (assuming there's no assurance that Manning is 100% healthy and not at a risk of reinury, which is the assumption we have to go with right now).

(ETA: Just don't tell ESPN we've got it figured out. It will ruin their plans of spending the next few months ramming the silly debate down our throats).

The city/team owes him nothing
That's completely ridiculous. The city/team owes him EVERYTHING. This year made it clearer than ever how he has carried this team with it's lame defenses and running game and holes all over the place to the playoffs every year. The Colts had been mostly a joke for the past 20 years before he came along, now they're perennial winners.

I understand the logic of what y'all are saying, but IMO no, you do not release him. You keep him and let Luck learn under him. NFL ready or not Luck would benefit a great deal so that is still a long-term payoff in ways not seen on the ledger. The money hit is big (how much of that counts to the cap?), but they are already in the playoffs every year with this team so it's not like that "destroys" the team, and remember the rookie cap is very friendly now and I don't see whoever they would draft being some lynchpin to another SB. Let Luck learn for however long Manning has left.
