As limited as Smith is, I don't see a lot of action coming his way from other teams - and he'll want to go somewhere to be a starter for sure. I can see him signing a mid-range starting QB salary to stay in SF, and then the 9ers picking up someone to challenge him either through FA (Josh Johnson, whom Harbaugh seems enamored with?) or through a 2nd/3rd round pick in the draft (Weeden, Cousins, Tannehill, Foles?) I can see him signing a mid-range starting QB salary to stay in SF, and then the 9ers picking up someone to challenge him either through FA (Josh Johnson, whom Harbaugh seems enamored with?) or through a 2nd/3rd round pick in the draft (Weeden, Cousins, Tannehill, Foles?) I picked up Josh Johnson in my dynasty last season for cheap. I'm hoping that either the new Tampa regime or another team gives him a shot. You're probably right about Smith as well. His best fit is with San Fran. The question is, how much does he think he's worth vs what the team really thinks of him. I could see the negotiation dragging out for a little while and one of them feeling like they got the shaft after it's all said & done. If they don't do this the opportunity will pass with the monster Def that is and they will continue to search year after year until the chance at a championship has passed and have to rebuild again. Obviously he is not Drew Brees but he had a great season winning week after week. When the coach of the year wants him back that says something. Time will tell but I think his future is actually very bright. He can make all the throws and not afraid off throwing into tight windows. The 49's have had massive turnover in coaching year in and year out. BTW, Crabtree had more catches in the regular season in one less game and Smith was the 9th rated QB in the league. I am not saying he is elite but he had a very good season throwing only 5 picks. No doubt there are better QB's but I don't see the teams that have them trading them anytime soon. He certainly showed upside this year, played aggressive, and the coach really likes him going into battle. Not sure of your measure but 17 TD's to 5 picks plus a couple of rushing TD's and then the 3rd highest rated QB in the playoffs with 6 total TD's looks pretty good to me. He did what was asked of him. His completion percentage was also very respectable at 61.3% which was equal to Matt Ryan and just ahead of Eli Manning. Not sure if he will improve again next year but this team is very good and no doubt he will have the consistency of the same system again next year. This was easily his best year as a pro. I don't think anyone considers Smith elite by any stretch, but it seems that up until the past season that it sure looks like he's been pretty severely undercoached. Again - no one is making an argument that he's a stud, but it appears that there is some untapped potential there that Harbaugh was able to drag out of him. He hangs his hat on some pretty shiatty qbs. Dude. Some "shiatty" QBs have proven to be pretty solid performers over time in the NFL, given the right coach and opportunity. Drew Brees and Rich Gannon come immediately to mind, but there are plenty others. I'm not quite sure why you're offended by discussing QBs on a FF MB - especially during the offseason, but if it's that bad why don't you just save yourself the aggravation and not get involved?
