Bronco Billy
But Drew says that's not good enough... Per Rotoworld: CBSSports.com's Larry Holder reports Drew Brees rejected an offer prior to the 2011 season that would have made him the highest-paid player in the NFL. This gibes with recent reports that hint Brees has been more demanding than expected, especially after suggestions that he "doesn't want or expect" his contract to prevent the Saints from re-signing other key players. NFL teams can get awfully creative with the cap, but $22-23 million per year for the quarterback would certainly be a hurdle in locking up players such as Carl Nicks and Marques Colston. Really? Brees needs to be more than the highest paid player? Going to be a bit more difficult to put up ginormous numbers when NO can't resign your WRs, Drew. Bronco Billy
None of the details of that offer were given. For all we know it could have been a back-loaded contract. Link The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees are millons of dollars apart on a new contract as the Monday franchise tag deadline draws near, sources tell ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The two sides, both of which believe they are making a fair offer, are facing a gap of $5 million per season for the first three seasons of the proposal, sources told Schefter. Brees, who led the Saints to their only Super Bowl championship and last season broke Dan Marino's single-season passing yards record, is seeking a contract that averages $23 million per season for the first three years of his deal, sources told Schefter. That's the same amount Peyton Manning's Colts contract averages the first three seasons. But the Saints are offering Brees a five-year contract that averages $18 million a year, sources told Schefter, which is the average that Manning and New England's Tom Brady are due to earn over the life of their deals. Brady's contract averages $18 million in the first three years, like the Saints' current offer to Brees. The real difference here is that under the league's new CBA, IND had to spend more money and used that additonal room to reward the guy who has been the face of the franchise for well over a decade. NO instead has much more difficult cap issues right now, but Brees wants the contract loaded to the front end like Manning's was and apparently can't break down and accept a contract like Brady has - which would pay him the same amount as both Manning and Brady over the life of the contract. Scooby's Hubby
I suspect backloaded, Rajn. He wants (and deserves) a big guarantee. The Saints have a cap room of $16 million? Looks like they won't be able to sign everyone, even if they franchise him
Ditkaless Wonders
So, the Saints organization plays along with Brees as they make running up and overinflating his stats a clear goal this past year, and now those chickens come home to roost in Brees having an overinflated opinion of his value. Drew, you are great. You are accurate and smart. You are also short and well on the wrong side of 30. One look at you does not inspire confidence you will survive your next hit. A record setting long term deal may not be in the cards. Perhaps you will just have to accept being paid commensurate with the few best, not better than them. Perhaps you will have to accept being only filthy rich rather than super filthy rich. Edited March 3, 2012 by Ditkaless Wonders
rajncajn
Billy, the offer Holder is referring to is the one offered during the season, not what they are offing now. I was just clarifying. Its just a bit misleading by Holder to put this out there with no details as if that is what they have been offering all along.

That's probably why it clearly says in the story that it was what Brees was offered in 2011 and turned down.
flemingd
They probably told him he should accept less since he doesn't have their defense trying to intentionally injure him in practice.
piratesownninjas
So does Brees want a contract that will allow the Saints to keep the team together, or does he want to be the highest paid player? Maybe Brees really isn't what he acts and says he is. He cares not about the team, but would rather squeeze every nickel out of the Saints. I wonder how much Mannings current situation could be swaying Brees further from the team goals and more towards the let me get mine now attitude? After all his son is only going to be a kicker in the NFL and they don't exactly make big bucks.
