Watching NFLN and Jason LaCanfora was just saying that it looks like a Non-Season Ending IR Designation will pass...example they used was Peyton being able to go on it instead of being active all year...no other specifics were given.

I wonder if this will be utilized similar to the DL-list in baseball. I know they have PUP for preseason injuries, but maybe they are thinking of doing something like a 4 week DL where they can put a player there and free up an available roster spot for that time frame.

IR already does this. If you IR someone they don't count against the roster limit. What this proposal would do would allow them to bring one guy per year off of IR at some point (perhaps with the 8 weeks listed above, I hadn't heard that yet). So recall Brady a few years ago - since this kind of injuryis generally a 12 month recovery they put him on IR when he blew out his knee. As it healed, there was talk he might have been able to play in December. Had this rule been in place, they could have activated him if they wanted to. Manning was the opposite last year - they didn't want to IR him because he'd be done for the year, so they waited to see if it would improve. He counted against their 53 man roster limit until they IR'd him late in the season.

Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) - a player can only be put on PUP prior to participating in training camp. If he practices one time, he cannot be put on PUP. Players cannot practice while on PUP list. Players can be taken off at any time during preseason and eligible to practice immediately. Players on PUP when the season starts must remain on PUP the first 6 weeks. After that the team can remove them from PUP and have a roster exemption that allows them to practice but not count against the active roster and not eligible to play in games. They can be activated at any time and eligible to play in games, or they can remain on this list for up to three weeks, after which they must be activated or put on IR.

Injured Reserve (IR) - a player can be put on IR at any time. Once put on IR the player is ineligible to practice with the team, does not count against the active roster limit, and may not be taken off IR.

Final rosters - During the regular season, all teams may have up to 53 players on their roster. There are a number of Reserve Lists that do not count against this limit, including IR, PUP, Retired, Non-football Injury, Refuse to Report, etc. Frequently called the Active Roster which causes confusion with the below inactives.

Game-day Inactives - of the 53 man active roster, only 45 may be Active on each game day. This is the list we all hover over all morning on Sundays as teams declare which ones are inactive for that game. This list is per-game, and involves no long-term reserving or practice limitations.

I could be wrong but if a player and team come to an injury settlement the team could cut him (even if on IR) and then that player can in theory play for another team that year...I forget the exact player but think it was a Texans or Giants DB that had this happen in the not to far past.
