How about good old fashioned ball control with a pounder to get what you need. Everyone's trying to beat their neighbors with a bigger swimming pool but in the end (a few seasons from now) it won't be as skewed as it currently is. Teams that are not pass happy are making sure they have a stable of rb's. Chicago (assuming forte gets signed), San Fran, KC have all brought in quality rb's. Each situation is a little different but in SF's case i don't see Gore's value taking that big of a hit. He's miles ahead of Jacobs in terms of talent and Jacobs really isn't that great of goal line back anyway. My first impression is that Jacobs is better at a 1 yd run on the goal line than A. Dixon. I cant tell you how many times over the last couple of years that it frustrates me when Gore is running roughshod all over the defense and as soon as the 49ers get near the goal line they pull him for A. Dixon who they run two or three times for negative yards and no TD. On the other hand, I dont like Jacobs "character" from how the media tends to portray it. There's no doubt that NFL trends, both offensive and defensive, move in waves And in fact, I'm guessing the catalyst to trend back toward the run game will be when the majority of defenses can stop the passing game. How long will that take? Who knows. Could be 10 years, could be 20 - but it will happen. Part of the edge I've gained in fantasy over the years is being to spot the new trend sooner than everyone else and drafting accordingly. But back OT - I'm not sure Jacobs can pound anything. For big guy, he goes down pretty easily and is usually hard to tackle only when he gets some steam going. But at that rate, you're better off with a speed guy over Jacobs. I'm guessing the 49ers view this as signing a veteran leader with 2 SB rings to sort of mentor and "rah" the RB corp. I really can't see him being much more than an emergency backup. This seems like a pretty good depth signing that at a minimum will reduce Gore's workload and keep him fresher - which is good for both the 9ers and FFers. I had high hopes for Hunter as the primary back up to Gore and potential starter when Gore goeds down with an injury. I'm not concerned. Hunter is Gore's heir apparent IMO, much more so than Jacobs. Not a Giants homer...but I agree with you...with that size I always thought he should have been running over people as opposed to trying to make them miss. He would seem to be ideal as a short yardage/goaline back but not the way he plays. I see him as no threat to either Gore or Hunter really.
