I was all decided on going the refurbished route from Adorama and went to the local store, Bennett's Camera to put the 60D in my hands to make sure I was comfortable with it. I spent over an hour with the salesman who has been with the shop for 30 years. I let him know up front that I was planning to buy online and he still was willing to spend an inordinate amount of time with me making sure I was buying the right camera for me. When we were done he put together 3 separate quotes for me if I decided to buy new from them instead of the online refurb.

So.... I'm driving home to get online to make my purchase and all the while I am thinking about the customer service I received at the local shop. I get home and get online to make my purchase and I start doing the math. 980 out the door online with a little more lens, refurbished versus 1100 out the door with a little less lens, new and fantastic local customer service.
Needless to say I jumped right back in my car and headed back to the local shop. The salesman was happy to see me back and proceeded to spend another hour plus with me. He had me taking shots with 5 different cameras and was installing different lens' on each so I could see the difference the lens makes when shooting the same subject. When all was said and done it came back to the 60D as the right camera for me. We decided on the 18-55 IS lens temporarily as I put a Tamron 18-270 lens on layaway. He installed a filter on the 18-55 and told me that when I pick up the Tamron they will give me the full $100 credit towards it if I want to trade the 18-55 in. Just keep the filter on it is all.

In a day and age where customer service is all but forgotten this was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. I am now the proud new owner of a camera that should last me a good long time!

I am a big believer in this.  If you don't buy from the local guy then he will stop being there to take care of you.

1 month in the books and I have been busy with the new camera.
I have attended a class on the EOS cameras and it was marginally helpful. Basically like going through the manual with a professional. Since then I have signed up for one on one training with a local pro and that is going to work out well as I am able to barter away some of the cost because he is trying to get his old Ford Focus together for his daughter to drive. In the next couple of months as my knowledge increases I will actually be going on shoots with him where if any of my images are included in a sale I will get paid for them.

I also have been asked by my brother if he could use some of my images in his web design and he would be willing to pay for them. Ha, thats kinda cool.

Being that I have been really busy at work and with side work I have had the extra loot available to really stock my bag in a hurry.
My rig thus far.

Canon 60D
Opteka battery grip. (what a steal at $50 this is a real nice alternative to the expensive Canon grips.)
2 extra batteries for a total of 3 so as to always have plenty of battery life when I head out the door.
2 4g memory cards. Each hold just shy of 500 images.
Canon 50mm 1.8 lens.
Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 Di with VC
Sigma  10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC
Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 (IF) Di

Looking forward to my next lens which will be a true Macro lens. Then it will be a long saving process for my long range zoom.
For anyone interested in following my progress just search for tbimm in fliker.

Happy shooting.

With the summer to work on my shooting and my gear things are going well. I have added the Canon 100mm 2.8L and the Tamron 18-270 walk around lens. Both great lens' in their own right but the 100L is just a wonderful piece of glass. There was one loss to the collection due to a rather severe drop. The Tamron 17-50 is no longer with us. I was in a hurry to get a shot and changing lens' then forgot to zip the bag shut and grabbed it to put it in the car. The lens went airborne and smashed on the concrete. it was that incident that made me go buy the 18-270 as I could have gotten both shots with the one lens making the change unnecessary.

Happy shooting all.
By the way I am about to get a 7D as soon as I have the money together for it. It is about time to send the 60D in for service and I was going to get a back up body so I have decided to make the 60 my backup and move up a notch.

tbimm, you'll love the 7D.  It's loaded with features, fast and the images are outstanding. The movies it takes are unreal, but it took me a while to get the feel of focusing with it (in movie mode).
I'm saving up for a Canon 50mm prime "L" lens. Love my cheapie but borrowed the big boy and its unreal.

Funny the same happened to me and that 1.2 is just screaming my name. Love the 1.8 but it is just not the same!

As the addiction grows.

Picked up my 7D today. Can't wait to get my memory card and start shooting. Also picking up a new bag this weekend as I have now outgrown my Canon bag.
Where does it end? :woot:

I like the 7D but was surprised at how much different it is from the 60D. Think I have the basics down but will be using the 60D for the shoot next week. Will probably have the 7D hanging on my left shoulder for my own shots.
