Az's lunch cart thread got me thinking...

Each locale seems to have their very own delicacy. I know we've all partaken in the shows with Zimmerman and Bourdain and seen some of the crazy local "favorites" that they relcutantly chow down on.

In my limited travels I have had the opportunity to partake in some traditional eats. A cow Tongue dish in Ecuador, Argentinian testicles, Some weird elk thing in Canada, Chitterlins in SA (South Alabama), conch fritters in the keys and all assorted things in Turkey.

Prehaps the most offensive one was in Turkey. I had already blasted a buddy of mine about trying to feed me organ meats. They'll eat pancreas, intestines, eyeballs, and brains served in a littany of manners. Intestines stuffed with chick peas, rice and lamb meat, intestines stuffed with rice mint and garbozo beans, brain soup, a stewed sheep (every part of the sheep stewed in a kettle)... But, the most offensive of these delicacies was presented to my in Taksim square in Istanbul.

We were out drinking and while meandering around Taksim my buddy pulls me into this hovel of a restaurant that was lined with people at the counter placing to go orders for the foodstuffs being served up. The smell of fresh bread permeated the place. Spices were abundant and assorted meat sandwiches were being thrown everywhich way.

I asked what we were getting and was told, basically, a chopped chicken sandwich... Well, it was not chicken, it was this crap called kokorec (pronounced - ko ko rech.) I took one bite, spit it out on the ground amongst a bunch of Turks who looked at me like I had just violated their minor sister in the ass in front of their grandmother...

Turns out kokorec is NOT chicken, rather it is this

Ate dog in southern China. I love living dogs but was not going to let that stop me because they have ranches in China for dogs, so these were quite likely, livestock. I say that with some confidence because the restaurant was rather nice. Thing is, it wasn't good. Certainly not good enough to allow me to entirely get past the whole "man's best friend" thing. I mean, if it was amazing? Sorry Fido. But pigs are delicious and I have no fond memories of laying on the couch with my trusty pet pig by my side, so that's sort of an easy one for me.

Certainly have eaten no shortage of organ meats...

Balut and Durian. Nuff said. I have ate many a strange cuisine in my travels. Grasshoppers and barbacoa in Mexico. Liked both. KimChi in Korea. Really liked the first batch I ate, but have yet to find any that was as good.. Sweetbread, not my thing, but not horrible. Yet when introduced to both Balut and Durian, I couldn't get past the rancid smell of both and almost puked when watching the locals eat this stuff like it was candy. Rotten, stinky candy.

I was in Belgium and ate 3 staples of their cuisine:

1. Mussels. They sucked. I've had better, meatier, bigger mussels at Monk's in Philadelphia, my favorite place for mussels so far.

2. Chocolate. Meh, it was very good, but you can get Lindt in America and it's about as good as the Belgian stuff.

3. Waffles. These blew me away. Big, fluffy, perfectly cooked, and coated with course granulated sugar that makes them crunchy to the bite. Friggin awesome.

My other favorite from that European trip was the Wienershnitzel in Germany. They sell them out of a cart like hot dogs in America. So simple: veal patty pounded tender, breaded and fried and slapped on a quality roll with mayo. So tasty, I stopped for one on the way to the airport when I was flying home. . .and then stopped for another at the train station.
