Post Draft feeling about my Beloved Boys

Well, here we are again. The Sun is more bold, Grass beginning to grow wildly, the draft has come and gone and the rookie camps have begun, all signaling the start of another NFL season. So what lies in store for this years Cowboys team. After a promising yet unfulfilling 2011 campaign, I was left pondering the possiblities. What if we had blocked and got the punt off against the Jets. What if Jason doesn't call time out against the Cards. What if we kept the ball out of Brady's hands against the Pats. What if Newman just stands in the way of the Giants FB instead of punking out and letting him jump over him TWICE! What if, what if what if......Seems like I play this record year after year.

So what is going to make 2012 any different? Corner help...........Maybe. Linebacker improvement........Maybe. Oline improvement, Maybe.......

What I know made a difference last year was one Demarco Murray. Yes, DM was a difference maker. He allowed Romo to relax and make plays. He got 3 to 5 yards on first down which made down and distance favorable. He chewed up clock. And most importantly, held onto the rock.

So if I had to predict the outcome of this season based on what I see now I say this.

We finally have the coverage we need to execute RR style of attack defense so I suspect our D will be much improved and those rainbows Eli throws off his back foot that somehow can stay in the air long enough for me to drive to the stadium, park, get a dog and a beer then watch Nicks craddle it into is arms, should now be picked or at least knocked away. No more off coverage. No more fat FB's jumping over our corners for 1st downs.

I can see Claiborne and Carr AND Jenks all in the base package with single safety. Thus matching up with three wide sets and bringing the heat. I can see getting that extra half second we so sorely needed for Spencer to get home. I envision Carter and Lee covering so much better on TE's and really putting pressure in the flat.

As for as Offense goes we always had the O we just needed to close on Defense. Robinson was a product of our Offense and Romo. I am wiling to bet he doesn't get 700 yards or even close to 10 TD's for the Jags. I predict Radway will make the team and produce. Ogletree is gone by week 3.

I like our draft, we made a bold move to secure the best cover corner in the draft and that will go a long way on our D.

My early thoughts are that we are going to be in a dog fight in the East and 9-7 may just be enough to get into the playoffs. I will tell you this though, the East is going to produce two playoff teams, I would predict three but that is way to tough for three 9-7 or 10-6 clubs to make it.

Dallas has certainly gotten younger and faster on Defense which is what's been holding us back year after year. Romo is going to get his SuperBowl and it is going to be within the next three years. This year begins the push as I see the pieces starting to come together. Dez is in his third year and now with a full offseason to really learn he should be a beast this year especially if Austin stays healthy.

Good feeling about this team, can't wait for Sept 5th. Should be a great start to the season.

Draft Comments

1st Round, 6th Pick (6th Overall)

CB Morris Claiborne, LSU................great pick, could not believe Jerry pulled this one off. For a second rounder only. Love this pick. Should be great for years to come.

3rd Round, 18th Pick (81st Overall)

DE Tyrone Crawford, Boise St..........This kid will be in the rotation come game time.

4th Round, 18th Pick (113th Overall)

OLB Kyle Wilber, Wake Forest............Can always use high motor guys and he is what you call Hummingbird type motor guy. Should be solid STer and develpmental LB.

4th Round, 40th Pick (135th Overall)

S Matt Johnson, EWU.........................Never heard of him.....guess well see.

5th Round, 17th Pick (152nd Overall)

WR Danny Coale, Virginia Tech..........Fast kid and has good hands. Like what I see but who knows.

6th Round, 16th Pick (186th Overall)

TE James Hanna, Oklahoma...............This was a great pick late. We need a third TE and he fits the bill but is a pass catcher not a blocker.

7th Round, 15th Pick (222nd Overall)

ILB Caleb McSurdy, Montana..............Isn't that a McDonalds smoothie or something.......I here he's a good player but well see.

Over all I like what we did but never no until next year or the year after whether they are worth a crap. Hope they are. Claibone and Crawford are going to be players though. I believe that.

Round 1, Pick 6 (6) (From Redskins through Rams) Morris Claiborne CB 5'11" 188 LSU 91.5 Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "One of the main reasons I think the Dallas Cowboys haven't been to a Super Bowl in some time is because of their secondary. Morris Claiborne is a special corner. He's got the best ball skills of any corner coming out in the last several years. This is a rare athlete." Round 3, Pick 18 (81) Tyrone Crawford DE 6'4" 275 Boise St. 77.5 Pick Analysis: Mayock's take: "This is a good pick. He's the prototypical 5-technique in the 3-4 defense. He provides tremendous depth that the Cowboys want." Round 4, Pick 18 (113) Kyle Wilber OLB 6'4" 249 Wake Forest 60.5 Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Wilber is a raw edge rusher with good first-step quickness and length. He flashes some rush skills, but will make his immediate contributions as a special teams maven. Round 4, Pick 40 (135) (Compensatory selection) Matt Johnson SS 6'1" 212 Eastern Washington 49.2 Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Johnson will get every opportunity to unseat the Cowboys' veteran safeties, but he will likely earn his keep as a special teams player. If he can makes significant strides as a defender while adding key contributions as a specialist, he could earn a long-term role in Dallas. Round 5, Pick 17 (152) Danny Coale WR 6'0" 201 Virginia Tech 58.2 Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Coale is a big, physical receiver built in the mold of the Cowboys' traditional wideouts. He will battle for a roster spot as a fourth or fifth receiver, but will need to provide special teams contributions to make the weekly active roster. Round 6, Pick 16 (18 James Hanna TE 6'4" 252 Oklahoma 65.0 Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: Hanna is a sneaky fast pass catcher with improving hands and ball skills. He could emerge as a dynamic No. 2 tight end with the ability to create mismatches in s Round 7, Pick 15 (222) Caleb McSurdy ILB 6'1" 245 Montana 52.7 Pick Analysis: Bucky Brooks' take: McSurdy will compete for a roster spot as a special teams standout.

The Claiborne move was gutsy but will pay off IMO. If they can find safeties who aren't pathetic they can certainly take the division.

I've got my doubts about Claiborne. I heard he got a 4 on the Wonderlic. A 4!! He may not be smart enough to learn the Cowboys' complex coverage schemes.

Hahaha,

See that guy in front of you, cover him. That is not real hard to comprehend. No doubt the team doctor can probably ace the Wonderlic but these two will not change places.

The Cowboys had an outstanding off season. While they are in a tough division, I also think the win the division this year and have a chance to go deep in the playoffs. They added serious play makers on defense which the needed in a big way.

Not with Slip at the helm.

I, for one, will be extremely pleased to see the Cowboys come into the GA Dome in the first round and get burned by Julio and Roddy.

Wild card teams like Atlanta travel, but keep hope alive! :boxing:

You just can't make this stuff up.

Bull$hit.............I do every single year. And one of these years I'm going to be right and I'll be here to make sure you and everyone else knows it.

Until then, I just take my lumps like a man and either ride my Boys into the flaming abyss when they don't live up to expectations or pound your threads with an "I told you so sledge hanmer" when they do. Either way It's a new year and the Cowboys are going to play another season which is all I can ask for.

See ya Sept 16th. You best hope your squad can play this year cause if we stomp you, in your own house, I'm gonna be all over you like a cheap suit! Don't think I forgot about that little mishap a few years past. ;)

How could that ever slip your mind?!?!

My man Slip has paid his dues and is ready to push though. Careful fellas, Romo is quietly one of the TOP QB's in passer rating, and Completions percentage in league HISTORY and well..................missed opportunities...... :(

However, I believe that record is safe as Jim Kelly holds that record, that may never be broke. Of course my Cowboys helped cement him there. ;)

Slip has all the tools just needs a little help on the defensive side of the ball and I think we may have gotten just that. Should be a very interesting year.

At least Jim Kelly got his team to all those SB games, what's Slip done?

And we all know that teams need elite defenses to win in this league.

Well you could be GB and go 15-1 and get exposed by a real Defense. Or the Colts with King Manning who struggled to get buy without one. So yes, we all know a Defense like the Giants with pass rush galore or the Niners with stingy D or the Ravens of years past is a necessary element. So I would say yes a Defense that can close and take the ball away and tackle someone is a prereq for Winning a Superbowl.

I will tell you this, Newman letting a FB jump over him for a first followed up by Cruz running away from him for 80+ on a shallow cross surely won't get it done.

Post draft thoughts about my beloved Niners:

I have no effing clue whether or not the guys they picked will be any good and will just have to wait and see. I was lukewarm at best about the Aldon Smith pick last year (and so was basically every talking head because there were apparently 3-4 guys who were "better" at his position on the board when they selected him). He turned out to be about the best rookie defender in the league. Further, given the success rate of draft picks in general, the fact that I have no freaking idea at all, basically puts me in league with nearly everyone involved with football.
