Hakeem Nicks - Broken Foot

Hakeem Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot this morning during the team’s second OTA (organized team activity) workout. Nicks suffered the injury early in practice as he was running a route during individual drills in the Timex Performance Center field house.

 

Nicks will undergo surgery tomorrow to have a screw inserted into the broken bone. The procedure will be performed by noted foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, N.C. The expected recovery time for Nicks is approximately 12 weeks. The Giants report to training camp at the University at Albany on July 26.

 

The Giants will have a total of nine OTAs before mandatory mini-camp on June 12-14.

While this won't affect his draft slot too much (unless it is slow to heal), you cannot like him taking until near the end of August to be ready to practice and by then, might as well be careful with him to make sure he starts the year. His absence kind of throws off the offense I would think at least a little. Have to consider how this might affect Manning and Cruz and how much if any Nicks falls. I know personally I dislike drafting anyone coming off an injury without much to go on for them. Probably means I will not end up with Nicks on my teams.

For those keeping track, the foot that Nicks had sprained in 2009 was his left foot.

 

Still troubling however to see him struggle with lower body injuries every year.

Golden opportunity for some young WRs to make a splash. It remains to be seen if Jernigan can make an impact beyond the return game, and if Randall is NFL-ready right out of the gate. Should be interesting.

 

Nicks is scaring me. I was on the fence in one keeper league and I think I'll let someone else deal with the headache.

It's certainly a pattern, and an alarming one at that, but he's produced big on the field when out there. I bet his draft value will change immensely with this. Not saying I'm content taking the risk at this point, obviously, but if he drops from a WR7 going in the late 2nd to a WR14-16 or so in the 4th/5th, he potentially represents some distinct value.

I'm with you on this one. I have him as #2 or #3, but that may change now.

I wrote that before they said he may not be ready for the start of the season. If he was able to return to 100% by say mid-camp, then he would not need to be moved much at all but it sounds more and more like a longer recovery than when I initially read it.

I quoted an ADP listing him as such. I've seen him as high as 4. I'm not sure you could truly justify listing him top 5 before today. Not sure he's even top 12 at this point.

I don't necessarily agree with him, but I can see the perspective - it's really a very tight grouping. Calvin and Fitz are distant 1/2, but after that there's a lot of flavor involved from guys with a TON of regular, proven production:

Are you injury/risk averse? Do you trust the QB? Will contract get in the way? Will the other weapons detract from their production? There's a reason strike every single guy down depending on your tolerance.

 

That's all without getting bold or projecting your own personal quesses - Austin/Bryant (either one could bust 90/1500/12), Maclin (LOVE him), AJ Green, Julio Jones, Brandon Marshall, Percy Harvin - every one of those guys has reasonable top 5 potential without straining your eyes looking for upside.

Until Fitz gets a Qb , I would have taken a healthy Nicks over him no questions asked. Not that Fitz isnt more talented, just really disapointed in the Qb play in Ariz.

Teams scheme to take the best receiver out of the game. If that is Cruz - and he hurt plenty of teams - then Cruz won't be getting the same single coverage this year.

Regardless of the recovery schedule from this injury, you can pencil him in to miss games along the way for his various tweaks and dings that are constantly popping up. Now he has a screw in his foot. I'll let someone else take the headache unless I can get him really cheap.

Our team was tickled to draft Nicks last year in FFPC at 2.10, as he typically wasn't falling past late 1st or mid 2nd. While Nicks wasn't a bust by any means, his production didn't really live up to his ADP (until after the FF playoffs, of course). Granted, while the first couple rounds is chock full of guys who don't live up to their drafting position; there are enough questions for me, not to atuomatically pencil Nicks in as a top 5 WR.

 

I'm yet to be convinced that in terms of FF production; Nick's situation isn't much different than Greg Jennings. Fine WRs, and worthy as a WR1 no doubt, but with a somewhat limited ceiling due to a QB who likes to fling the ball all over the field to a multitude of different receiving options.
