Wild Turkey 81

This is a good whiskey. I was looking for a lighter bourbon for the summer, maybe something for mixing, and this was recommended to me. Its much lighter than the 101, but it has plenty of spice, vanilla and oak. I don't think that you can beat it at $19 for 750 ml. At that price, you're not going to feel bad throwing it into your Old Fashioned or whatever. But it stands up on its own quite well.

Is this a special blend or just the regular Wild Turkey?

I had some WT last weekend, and frankly thought it was a weak flavored drink. Too many other decent choices that don't break the bank IMO.

If it is a special blend I shall give it a go.

I probably should have emphasized the $19.00 more.

Its regular Wild Turkey. They released it last year to replace the 80.

For you or other bourbon aficionados, its probably going to be too lightweight. There are times when I want a "light" bourbon or scotch, and this one fits the bill.

I had bad info. I knew it replaced the old WT 80. I'd forgotten that WT 80 was "regular WT". Regardless, I do think it's significantly better than the old stuff.

When I want it lighter I just toss in a cube :D

That rarely happens, though. Then again I am not a Manhattan/Old Fashioned kind of guy. I give a hoot and don't pollute....my booze!.

A couple of my buddies have started making their own bourbon. I have a bottle & it's not bad.

Your buddies are bootleggers and the stuff they gave you is called "shine". Be careful, that stuff can make you go blind.

Makers is still the most popular at the bar. I get the Knob Creek request occasionally as well . If they are mixing its usually makers and ginger and sometimes makers and coke

Interesting. I would think that people would mix with cheaper booze like Jack, Jim or Wild Turkey.

I am hoping to pick up a bottle of Makers 46 this weekend to try :)

Well Jack gets ordered much more than makers and yes that gets mixed with coke mostly and ginger a lot too . You are correct that technically Jack meets the qualifications of a bourbon but its marketed as a whisky . From wiki below

Although the product generally meets the regulatory criteria for classification as a straight bourbon, the company disavows this classification and markets it simply as Tennessee whiskey rather than as Tennessee bourbon.[3][4]

I thought that 'bourbon' had to be made in a particular place, similar to champagne, cognac and armagnac. Perhaps that standard has been loosened, but Jack does the right thing. And their higher end stuff is some fine juice, worthy of calling it whatever they like :D
