I have the #7 pick in a new 12 team dynasty league. From talking with the top 6 picks, i wont have a shot at Rodgers, Cam, Foster, McCoy, RIce and Megatron.  I'm debating between Stafford or Ryan Matthews at #7.  I am hesitant to take Stafford because I really like the value I can get later at QB (i am targeting brees or brady in the 2nd, or Rivers, Matt Ryan, Eli, or Romo in the 4th).  I love that Matthews has the RB spot to himself now in SD and i think he can put up stud RB numbers, but his injury history also scares me off a little bit to use him as the foundation of my dynasty team.

Any advice to help steer me towards a solid foundation for my dynasty squad?

I would go with Matthews over the QB.  Even in a dynasty a QB can be had later on

There's no way to answer this accurately without knowing the scoring system.

RBs are way over-rated in a start up dynasty draft. When drafting, try to draft for a successful team in year two. Consider that everyone has the same assets before the draft starts. That means that everyone has an equal chance of winning. By drafting for year two, you'll avoid the mistake of drafting a RB over 26yo or a WR/TE over 30yo.

RBs are the most volatile position, partly due to the higher risk of injury. I like Stafford, but if you're really sure that you could get Brees, that'd work, but he's the oldest player that I'd draft in a start up. I wouldn't take Brady.

I'd take AJGreen, Gronk or Graham over Ryan Mathews.

I'll elaborate even more if it you want me to.

all TDs are 6 pts. PPR. 10 yards per point for rush & receiving, 25 yards per point for passing.

I think I'm leaning towards Stafford because of his age and the fact he gets to throw to Megatron for many years to come. Matthews could be a stud back now that tolbert is gone, but he is also injury prone already & now adding more to his workload.  So as of today, Stafford is my guy going into the draft.  I'm hoping to get AJ, Nicks or Julio in round 2 on the way back.  I'm also trying to trade up to the beginning of round 3 from the middle to snag a RB before the RB crop is dwindled.  I think that gives me a solid foundation to build on going forward.  If I stay in the middle of round 3 then I'll be seeing if Graham drops to me or looking at best available RB/WR at my spot.

I couldnt take a TE at that pick as said above, period. I do agree of being cautious about picking older players, though proven, dont provide long term dynasty value. However, if you get a guy who is 26yo and proven, how can that be bad? Let's be real...he has at least 4yrs left. In first round i'd rather take a vet with 4yrs left and proven track record then a younger guy with maybe one. Far as stafford, id never take him there...and im near detroit and a big fan...just not the place. To each their own i suppose.

its looking like i'm gonna get megatron, rice or mccoy at #7....i couldn't be happier!!

cam is going #1 (he is a carolina fan), rodgers is 2, and another carolina fan traded up to #3 for cam without knowing he was going at #1 so his plan is stafford since he gave up so much to move up from #11. foster will definitely be either 4 or 5, so i'll get the one that is left of those 3. best possible scenario for me, i was upset when i got that draft spot but now i'm going crazy. now i just gotta hope AJ, nicks or julio makes it to me at #6 in the 2nd (12 team league). thanks for the advice on stafford and matthews, but looks like i wont need to make a decision in the 1st round after all.

ended up with Megatron in the draft today at #7. got AJ green in round 2 and then lynch and dez in rounds 3 and 4. happy how it went, 40 rounds was a long day but i was able to build some depth and get some rookies for to build a strong start to my DTS.  definitely showed who did their research...especially with the IDP spots.
