ajh2
ESPN already did a commentary on this.... best response.... waffle fries from Chic-fil-a. Actually his face mask should be illegal. It is not about his own safety but for the saftey of those he tackles. He and the rest of the league should be wearing smaller face masks with fewer bars and cross pieces instead of more. He should be wearing a sheild attached to a smaller face mask if having hands in the mask is a problem. Now, all an opposing player has to do is shove his mask back with the palm of their hand which does not solve the problem. Bronco Billy
How does the face mask pose an injury risk to other players? Getting fingers caught between the bars with all those small spaces - which can be completely incidental in the trenches. A quick jerk of the head and you've got a nasty break. I agree that it's a bad idea. What does this guy envision himself as? Darth Tuck? Edited June 18, 2012 by Bronco Billy

It's hard to tell if you could get a finger stuck in there or not. I would guess that most players don't have baby hands.

He'll spend the next several plays picking grass out of all those tiny holes.
satelliteoflovegm
Anyone remember years and YEARS ago on that play Ken Anderson of the Bengals got his helmet twisted completely around his head. NBC at the time had the games and they or maybe CBS had an expert on the next week saying soon all the helmets would essentially be motorcycle helmets with a face shield. and leave nothing to grab onto for twisting or pulling. Where's that? Of course they'd likely fog up and be useless and the plastic would surely shatter. I guess that's where that is. Impractical. Ditkaless Wonders
I think he should go with the mask worn by "The Humongous" in Mad Max.

The reason motorcycle helmets fog up is there is no airflow. You breath and the hot air gets caught in the helmet. There are plenty of football helmets out there that have a visor. The difference is that air temp on both sides of the visor is the same. I think they could make a helmet without the crossbars. However it may not be accepted by players and teams. Big John
I think they could make a helmet without the crossbars. However it may not be accepted by players and teams. Or the NFL. The current rules require at least 2 crossbars. (No more Theismann single-bar facemask) A purpose was to reduce facial injuries.
ajh2
The hand injuries I was thinking of was the finger tips and pinkies getting caught in the space. Tuck said it was for his neck; however, there is now enough resistance that a shove to teh mask will have the same effect.
