Actually his face mask should be illegal. It is not about his own safety but for the saftey of those he tackles. He and the rest of the league should be wearing smaller face masks with fewer bars and cross pieces instead of more. He should be wearing a sheild attached to a smaller face mask if having hands in the mask is a problem. Now, all an opposing player has to do is shove his mask back with the palm of their hand which does not solve the problem.

How does the face mask pose an injury risk to other players?

Getting fingers caught between the bars with all those small spaces - which can be completely incidental in the trenches. A quick jerk of the head and you've got a nasty break. I agree that it's a bad idea. What does this guy envision himself as? Darth Tuck?

This.
I can't wait to see the first time he takes a face plant on a wet grass field, and comes away with that whole thing covered. He'll spend the next several plays picking grass out of all those tiny holes.

Where's that? Of course they'd likely fog up and be useless and the plastic would surely shatter. I guess that's where that is. Impractical.

guess it doesn't impair his vision too much when chasing the QB

The reason motorcycle helmets fog up is there is no airflow. You breath and the hot air gets caught in the helmet. There are plenty of football helmets out there that have a visor. The difference is that air temp on both sides of the visor is the same.
I think they could make a helmet without the crossbars. However it may not be accepted by players and teams.

Tuck said it was for his neck; however, there is now enough resistance that a shove to teh mask will have the same effect.
