49erAddict-08
My friends and I would like to try a blind-bid auction draft. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, how did you work out the logistics?
White lightning
I know absolutely nothing about blind-bid auction drafts, but I did a forum "search" and found this previous thread. Hope it helps. http://forums.thehuddle.com/index.php?/topic/371683-blind-bids-and-how-it-works/page__hl__+auction%20+draft#entry3589075
muck
I've seen something like this before (a long time ago), and it went something like this: * A preset list of players was put of for blind bid (say 20 guys at a time), and they were all over the board in terms of talent, projected production, etc. A comparable list for this coming season would have (say) Tom Brady, Matt Cassell, Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Nate Burleson and Roddy White on it. * Everyone submits a bid for each of the 20 players. * When the last guy submits his bids, all bids are made public. * The highest bidder for each player won the player. I do not remember if they won them at the price they bid, or if they won them at $1 over the 2nd highest bidders' price. * After these players are allocated, each owner can then make an informed decision on bids for the next block of 20 players. * The blocks of which 20 players were going to be grouped together and which blocks were going to be put out in which order was determined ahead of time by the commish (and maybe the co-commish too?). * After (say) the top 24 QBs, top 54 RBs, top 78 WRs and top 24 TEs are auctioned off, then there was some sort of typical 'nominate a player and bid until nobody bids any more' system so that each owner could go get sleepers, etc. that may not have come up in the blocks of 20 players nominated at a time. Scooby's Hubby
Blind bidding makes it harder to build your team b/c you don;t know what positions you will fill, b/c you don;t know how many of each position you will win. Example, you may bid more on a RB knowing that you already have two WRs, or vice versa. Being blind, it is possible to end up with 4 WRs and zero RBs and be left with less money. I prefer a live auction for this reason. I like Muck's way of grouping 20 players of various positions at a time. That should help the dilema I mentioned. However, who gets to set those up and how much time will that take, etc. is another dilema. Sounds like a blind auction could be a pain in the arse. There is a myth out there that live auctions take longer than a live draft, this is not the case. There is not much of a difference in time. Big Country
Going on the assumption that this is a live auction format (not that the logistics couldn't be reworked for a slow style draft/auction), here is how I would approach it: Have your set nomination order (which owner gets to nominate the player) 1 thru 12 or however many teams you have. Could also go with the winner of the previous player gets to nominate the next player, up to you to decide. Once a player is nominated, each owner has 1 minute to submit their bid. At the end of the minute, the bids are revealed, the player is awarded and the next player is nominated for bid. Rinse, repeat. If you aren't going to be able to do a live auction, then muck's proposal is likely best in doing the bids in blocks of players, as trying to do the above in a non-live format would take forever.
muck
Oh, there was another step in there ... Before players are awarded, the commish would go through all the submitted bids and kick out any illegal bids before awarding players. The only real requirement for what is an 'illegal bid' would be, after having been awarded a player at that price, will that owner be able to fill out the rest of their roster at the minimum bid per player. ****************** Another tweak to it would be to auction all the QBs at once, in say, 5-10 player blocks (i.e., BLOCK #1 = Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Fitzpatrick, Stafford and EManning ... BLOCK #2 = Sanchez, Tebow, Cassel, PManning, Brady ... etc ...) ... then do all the RBs the same way ... etc ... 49erAddict-08
Thanks for the tips! I think we will give it a try. We have tried live auctions before and were just thinking of trying something different.
