delfamdelfam
any reason for Jacksonville to pay MJD? I mean they miss the playoffs with or without him and they are in rebuilding mode. Why spend a big contract on a RB with so much tread on the tire when your such a bad team? Edited July 20, 2012 by delfamdelfam
Ditkaless Wonders
While it is true they are not a contender with or without him they need him to keep faith with what fan base they have left, and they need him to take pressure off of Gabbert if he is ever to grow into his role. With the draft of Blackmon and the acquisition of Robinson one could argue they may have some offensive cedibility if Gabbert improves or if they start Garrad, but they need MJD. I don't know that you can send a message to that fan base that you are throwing in the towell before the season even starts. This will be tricky though, they alsocan't misallocate their cap space if they ever hope to turn things around there.
stethant
It's true this move would alienate the fan base but, if you're seriously considering moving the team then maybe you don't care and instead focus back on the business side of things. I have no idea if the Jags owner is contemplating a move but I found it interesting that Goodell laid out the process before the start of this season...hmmm... MJD is still only 27 and without him the Jags could rival the 2011 Colts for atrocious play. If he's out for any appreciable length of the season I agree with the comment above that they also sacrifice their investment in Gabbert, whatever that's still worth. Maybe this is just posturing with/by the new owner to set his reputation?
chinatown dragons
[ if Gabbert improves or if they start Garrad, but they need MJD. ...not gonna be able to start Garrad as he's now a Dolphin......its Gabbert's team....
Papajohn
At least without MJD they are almost sure to get the first pick overall in the 2013 draft, especially if Gabbert doesn't improve this season. Then they can replace Gabbert (or maybe MJD). If they on top of that are seriously considering moving to L.A., then they might even prefer this scenario
TheCommish
I believe I saw that he is owed $9.5 million in salary for the next 2 seasons. And his current contract gave him a $17.5 million signing bonus ($3.5 million per year). That means he's getting over $8 million per season - which is fair. I don't see the team budging on this one. Pisses me off when players want these big signing bonuses and then they don't count it when they say they are underpaid in the last year or two of a deal. They don't want to consider the fact that they were severly overpaid in year 1 if you include all of the signing bonus.
KOKIDKOKID
I think they fully intend to try to move...writing seems to be on the wall by them already coming out and saying they will not take advantage of the new 75% sell out to avoid a broadcasting blackout rule...to me that says "screw you fans" and making MJD play out his contract (I cannot blame Jax for that) they further will alienate their fan base assuring smaller at home crowds = helping a relocation bid. Just my opinion though. KO'd
Papajohn
Many other teams have made the same choice regarding the blackouts.
KOKIDKOKID
I had not heard that...thanks...has Oakland made that same decision? They rarely sell out - just curious if they were one of those teams too. Wonder how many teams that do not routinely sell out (like Jax, Oakland) have decided to not adhere to the 75% blackout ruling? No big deal if Dallas, SF, NY teams, Pats and others who always sell out say "thanks but no thanks" to the ruling. KO'd
Big John
I think Tampa is the only team to opt for the new blackout rule for the lower standard.

Papajohn
Wasn't there also something about home teams splitting profit the away teams if they agreed to the deal? Something like the profit from selling tickets after 75% was reached would be split?

WashingtonD
The talent is there, he was undervalued last year and overperformed his ADP in all scoring formats...I want to stay away from him because of this contract, but in redraft if he really plummets I might take the chance.
