The Hitter
Part one - Just joined a new $$ league and found out that the draft order is determined by auctioning the draft spots. The bid amounts are deducted from the $1000 allotment for FA bid money (ie if you win the 1.1 after bidding $400, you begin the year with only $600 in FA bid money). I've ever participated in a draft with this process but I've seen other leagues around that use that process. So any ideas, suggestions? Does it even matter? Since I'm used to the draft order being randomly selected, I feel you can win at any spot, but wondering if I may be missing anything. Part two - Same league uses a 3rd round reversal system (1-12. 12-1, 12-1). This is also something I've never participated in, but am aware some other leagues use it. Any ideas here? Combining these two new 'rules', any ideas or strategies anyone can point out to me? Much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
delusions of grandeur
I've never done a 3RR, but I'd say that it should be very helpful this year if you don't get a top 3 pick, since there are some really nice prospects available in the 2nd and 3rd that are comparable with the non-top 4. Really, if it weren't for the 3RR, it'd be much more worth it to secure a top 4 pick, even if it depleted your FA $, but I think this gives you an opportunity to decide where you can wait until in the first to secure a guy you want, and then soak up value with higher picks in the 2nd and 3rd in this very top-heavy draft. I think you need to ask yourself if there is a player (or players) you feel strongly enough about that you're going to need a top 3-4 pick to get, or if you're confident building a team from the tail end of the first round. If you feel like you gotta have Foster, Rice, McCoy, Rodgers, Calvin Johnson, etc you should bid high and make sure you get one. Myself, I may opt to save the money and pick 12th. If I am understanding correctly, you'd have the 1.12, 2.1, and 3.1 picks? You should be able to build a nice core there and then you can likely outbid a lot of other owners in FA throughout the season. Of course, its hard to say for sure without seeing how the bidding unfolds for draft position. Last several years in my leagues, the teams with the best records (and championships) have come from all over the place in the draft order. Commonality was they all hit it big on at least a couple FA and/or players who greatly outproduced their draft position. Something to consider I guess. It makes the overall snake draft format a lot more equal for all draft positions.
jax20008kid
Hitter, I've been playing in a league that uses 3rd RR for about 7-8 years now and it definitely does even out the playing field as far as what spot you are picking from. Grabbing one of those top spots ( and stud RB's) isn't necessarily the best move. I suggested that in our rule change thread last year in BLNY, but got shot down....I, personally, like the 3rd RR. As for the auction part of picking your draft slot, I wouldn't spend a lot of your auction money due to the 3rd RR.
