The Jeff Demps Derby

Recommended Posts

Coming back from a sliver medal for Team U.S.A.’s 4 x 100 relay team in the Olympics, former Florida RB Demps has announced he's going to enter the NFL, and is already drawing interest, with team message boards and blogs already buzzing about him.

With his smallish 5-7 190 frame, I'm not sure he has anymore upside than a McCluster or Rainey, but he sure is some kinda fast, and so at minimum could be a top-notch return specialist and gadget player.

Falcons could sure use the return help, but there might be along list of potential suitors before it's all over.

No, he's a free agent now.

Though I'm not sure exactly how that works, because I had always thought that the guys had to go through some sort of draft, whether regular or supplemental, or else it seems like any player could do the same to be able to play for the team he wants to play for.... Is there a wage-scale regarding UDFAs? Either way, seems strange, but no, he's talking to teams as we speak.

I think he declared and filed paperwork for the 2012 draft, but told everyone he wasn't going to play football and was focusing on the Olympics . . . so he went undrafted. That's why he's an UFA.

Ah, that's probably right. I either misread that or they misreported it like he'd just filled out the paperwork.

I'm not sure there's anything to see here yet fantasy-wise outside of return-heavy dynasty leagues, but I could potentially see any team interested in this kid if he wants to play for them.

Looks like Jets / Tebow wants him, would he be in any kind of "football" condition to play any time soon?

Maybe not quite "football shape", but obviously the guy still going to be in great shape coming back from training for the Olympics...

What's going to keep him off the field is how far behind he is, even further behind than those who went through the lockout last year. Where he can make his mark early is in the return game, though of course has the potential to be used in a few gadget plays as the season goes on.

I'm not even sure he's that great of a dynasty prospect yet though, and probably not even worth a late-round flier in a redraft, IMO.

Anyone else getting the impression that the Pats are repeating the mistakes that the PHI "dream team" did?

I see it as just the opposite. They aren't paying premium prices to bring in blingy flashy names. They are churning in bit players at bargain prices, taking them for a test drive, and moving them out if they can't fit a niche. Brandon Lloyd is the only real name they have brought in, and he's so star-crossed over McDaniel they hardly had to even pay him. Albert Haynesworth stuck around for a cup of coffee or two (very quietly, I might add). Anthony Gonzales? Toast. Joseph Addai? Done. Ocho Cinco? Train wreck. Heck they even let BJGE leave and he's even a guy that could still have given them something. Maybe Demps can contribute in the return game. Maybe he can't and they cut him. Either way it's very low risk and nothing but upside in return.
