Wilson named week #1 starter for Seahawks

Comes as no surprise given Friday night's game and the whole pre-season. Carroll stated at the beginning of the season it was an open QB competition and it apparently was. Tavaris Jackson went from getting majority of first reps in training camp to being traded and Flynn went from signing a fairly beefy short term contract and assumed shoe-in starter to holding a clipboard in week 1.

Carroll's unconventional management strategy has, at the fairly least, brought satisfactory dividends for overall improvement. It will be interesting to see how it turns out long term. As a fan, it's been a much more entertaining ride than watching the last couple years of Holmgren passing the torch to Mora.

Big news. The kid has earned it. I think his leash is fairly long. He's the QBOTF, it isn't just an experiment. That said, their first 6-7 games are pretty brutal. The kid is going to have to come up with some points if he wants to get a couple of wins. The schedule gets a lot lighter late in the season, so if Wilson can weather the storm, he should finish the season strong. But if he starts out 1-3 or 1-4, do they pull the plug? I kind of doubt it. Carroll and Schneider love the kid and will give him every chance to stick.

Well, I'm a fan of both Flynn and Wilson. I would absolutely say that Wilson earned it through merit rather than Flynn losing the job through poor play. I though Flynn moved the team well and would have looked better if he weren't saddled with trying to force passes to TO to see if he could still play. Owens dropped a long TD pass that Flynn put on the money, and Owens misran several routes - most notably back shoulder throws by Flynn that were right on the mark but that Owens failed to make any adjustment for but rather continued on his downfield route.

I'm disappointed that Flynn won't get his chance because I do think he'll do well as a starter in the NFL, and I also think Wilson may have benefited significantly from watching and learning a bit. But I also hope Wilson does very well. I've got some strong mixed feelings on this.

I'm sure the coaching staff didn't blindly look at his completion percentage...if the throw was where it should have been and when etc...then that's what the coaches want to see...QB can't make someone catch the ball.

My point being that if Owens does his job and Flynn completes those passes, the difference between Flynn and Wilson might not look so glaring. But again - I'll repeat it - I'd say Wilson earned the job rather than Flynn losing it. Some of his plays were eye-popping. But will it carry into the regular season as a rookie playing against 1s for entire games? I don't know. I'm pulling for the kid, but I feel he may be getting saddled with an awful lot. SEA's going to be playing a lot of youth at the skill positions, and that schedule early on is a meat grinder.

I know what you are saying...just pointing out the coaches can discern what is the QBs fault and what isn't...mabye to the average fan if TO holds on Flynn looks better, but that's about it...and I agree, Flynn didn't lose the job as much as Wilson won it.

This. Flynn looked to be the exact type of efficient game manager everyone expected when the Hawks signed him (from the most casual of fans, let alone coaches). The potential specialness of Wilson is obvious. Wilson was going to be the starter with or without training camp fodder in the name of TO and it's kind of odd it's a point worthy of discussion.

I understand what you are saying, GB, and don't want to belabor the point too much since it appears to be a non-issue going forward. But those 2 back shoulder throws that Flynn made vs Denver and TO ran off were of the highest quality kind of NFL throws, and it usually takes a seasoned high quality QB to make that throw with consistency. The back shoulder throw when placed properly is virtually unstoppable, since the DB is ahead of the play and running with the WR and the ball is in the air before the WR stops for his route adjustment.

No one in the league does it better than Rodgers, and Brady and Brees both use it to scorch Ds. But it is a very difficult throw to pull off - maybe the toughest and right up there with a quality deep fade dropped in the bucket.

In any case - we'll see if SEA is truly sold on Wilson if they keep Jackson as a backup and trade Flynn - since there are teams looking for a guy like Flynn at his price right now.

They didn't. Jackson is now in Buffalo

Yeah just saw that. Thanks.

Couldn't help but think there might be some interest and sense of urgency in AZ and with the Jets at least, and that SEA might have been able to recoup a decent midround pick for Flynn.

Flynn may be overpaid as a back-up, but he's relatively cheap as a starter. I think AZ is way more on the hook for Kolb than SEA is for Flynn (could be wrong).

That means 1) He's not unaffordable as an insurance policy because he has looked good and Wilson could falter. 2) He'll still be very tradable if Wilson does well.

On another note entirely, I am truly amazed at the free pass NC St. HC has gotten from the local media with regard to how this whole thing has played out.

Rewind a bit:

Wilson was rookie of the year as freshman at NC St. Every year, he played baseball in the spring and football in the fall. For the most part, because of his size, it was assumed he'd be a more realistic pro prospect at baseball. Thing is, he continued to struggle in the lower minors.

At any rate, new coach Tom O'Brian basically told him between his Jr and Sr years that he had to quite baseball or leave the team and he chose to leave the team.

So, amazing thing part 1. An undeniably better program, Wisc didn't seem to have any problem with Wilson playing baseball in the spring. I mean, you're good enough to play for a perennial top 10 team, but not NC St. I mean, it's not like Fordham said, "Sure, just be here by August". This was freaking Wisc!

Oh, and it seems like he was good enough to be drafted in the 3rd round, where QBs with potential get taken. Did I say "good enough to be drafted"? I meant, good enough to start week 1 of their rookie year.

Also, basically everyone who has ever met the guy says nothing but great things about him.

So, Tom O'Brian, who's been leading his team to, at best, decent records in a mediocre conference, basically pushed this guy out the door, and nobody is saying boo. Which is more amazing still given how insane NC St. fans can be. A recent B-ball coach ended up leaving because he was being stalked and heckled so much his kids where taking it at school because he couldn't beat UNC or Duke but lead the Pack to the NCAA 5 straight seasons.

Would it be wise to use my backup QB in jay cutler as trade bait (along with some WR) and pickup Wilson? Starter is Brady. 6 team league.
