State of the NFL and Goodell

This year, in spite of a good fantasy performance so far, football has me bummed. There's no reason the NFL has to stay popular forever, as other professional sports leagues have learned. The lockout negotiations didn't bother me - it's that the NFL seems rudderless. Where did all the adults go?

Bill Simmons wrote a week or two ago that Goodell was the worst commissioner in the history of the NFL. The more I think about this the more it rings true to me. There is a pattern developing to suggest that no one is thinking big picture on the future and direction of football, other than to maximize profits. My issues:

1. The replacement referee situation is completely unnecessary. Compromise like every other business/labor group does and get on with making scads of money. The quality of the games suffers and I'm less likely to watch games I'm not interested in - just like gilthorp said in another thread. Find out who the owner/owners are with the small dicks, remove them from the process, and make a deal.

2. The concussion issue. If you don't think this could derail football forever, you're mistaken. There is zero, ZERO, meaningful leadership on this issue from the NFL. Address the issue proactively now and nip this in the bud. If you think the league is mamby-pamby now, just wait 5 years. Invest in research to make helmets safer and demand improvements in fundamental tackling techniques.

3. Why is the approach to every problem so heavy handed? First the players turned on Goodell, now the refs are turning on Goodell - you would be a much better spokesperson for ownership if you could actually BUILD consensus on issues. What the hell happened to the art of diplomacy?

4. Thursday night games all. season. long. If you give someone steak 5 nights a week don't be surprised when they stop eating steak.

5. Bountygate. 100% amateur hour at this point. If the case was so iron-clad, where's all the irrefutable evidence? The scandal damages the product and undermines league credibility. Learn your lesson, wrap this up one way or the other, and move on.

I don't have the knowledge to know if Goodell is just shilling for the owners, like MLB and Selig, or if this is part of some vision. If it's the vision thing - time for a new vision. This is the first year I've turned off games due to lack of interest.

Let's build some goodwill, improve the product on the field, and make sure the NFL is just as popular 20 years from now. Change from within...... :usa:

1. More than the bad calls, the pace of the games is just too slow. The reason why I hate baseball is because there is so much downtime, if we keep getting 3 hour 45 minute games I'm not sure how much I will watch other than my local team.

2. This all comes down to high school and college football coaches. If they taught people how to tackle with their shoulder and not their heads it would be much easier to regulate in the NFL. Really need to make a youth program or coach training program.

3. I don't get this at all, guys like Stallworth get minimal suspensions even they what they did is atrocious, and guys like Harrison get two games for an illegal hit. It just doesn't seem to match.

4. This is so bad. The reason the NFL is so good is because you can't wait each week to see the games. Having a game every Thursday is fun, but takes away something special the NFL had.

5. Can you just show us the evidence you claim you have? We know you don't have any.

What I can't understand is why can't some lawyer draw up a document that all players sign that basically says "we absolve the NFL from all litigation because we realize that this is footballand we are trying to kill each other". Is there any question that the NFL is reacting to lawsuits and liability?

The pace of the game is what is really bothering me. I was at the Eagles game...and when I tell you that they took 8 minutes to figure out that they mis spoted the ball and another 10 on a whole 2 minute warning/replay disaster at the end of the game, its hard to get in a flow. Every scoring play is being reviewed...there are challenges all over the pace...the flow has been completely stopped. I hope this does not turn out to be like baseball, where an average game in the 70's was like 2hrs 30 min and now games are closer to 3 1/2 hrs if you're lucky. one of the greatest things is the NFL rewind...waht a way to watch a game! Although its not as fun already knowing the outcome....

Totally agree with your assessment. I was through with Goodell a few years back when he fined some minimum wage, hanging on by a thread player big time for what I felt was a minor celebration after a touchdown. I was like man, he's cold.

I'm also with you on the Thursday night game thing. I wish they would have just kept it at the first game of the season and Thanksgiving. Fantasy wise, it sucks. Nothing like having a couple players suck during the Thursday game ruining your entire football weekend. If they go off, well I would have rather waited and enjoyed it within the confines of NFL Sunday.
