What Is Wrong With People ?!?!

Apologies in advance if this being discussed in another thread. I was just watching Eric Winson of the Chiefs make a passionate speech regarding the fans booing Matt Cassel when he was knocked out of the game.

Seriously, when this stuff happens, it embarrasses me as an NFL fan, hell, it embarrasses me as human being. What causes a group of people to actually cheer when a football player is laying injured on the ground ? I know it is a probably just a certain percentage of the fan-base making the rest look bad, but, this is ridiculous. I love football and I love the Steelers, but, you will NEVER hear me cheer an athlete that is on the ground injured.

I hate it when fans boo at the end of games, when they boo because they thing someone on the opposing team is faking injury. No matter how obvious it looks, you don't know the real situation. Seriously, a large percentage of NFL fans need to grow up and stop acting like children. My son loves the Steelers, and I probably won't take him to a game until he's 10 years old at least, due to some of the things that I've seen at NFL games.

Seriously, this kind of garbage is embarrassing.

Its simple really, alcohol kills their inhibitions. Add in a large group and a form of mob mentality kicks in.

I remember hearing some stupid CHIPS AHOY! at games, and probably saying my share of it while being hammered at games.

Heck, we have another thread ripping the NFL's partition ship with ACS to raise breast cancer awareness (and funding for research etc.)

Check this video.

Shows the play as it was happening and the fan reaction afterword. The first cheers were for the results of the play. Afterword, clearly the fans cheered Cassell when he was able to walk off on his own power. This is raw footage from a local TV station.

And it is not new as Eagles fan cheered Irvin's injury in 1999.

As a buddy of mine said as Irvin was laying on the field... "Give him a hit of crack, he'll get up."

There was definitely some extended cheering going on after the play was over and it was clear that Cassel was injured. However, there were loud cheers when he was able to get up and walk off on his own power. So, as is usually the case, this is an issue with a handful of fans being idiots, while the majority were doing the right thing.

Keep in mind that Winston was on the field, and he could probably visually see fans cheering/celebrating that Cassel was injured.

Maybe some of them graduated from CR State and have Brady Quinn rostered on their team?

I was wondering if my name was going to come up in this and sure enough......

I do think there are similarities to my beliefs and what occurred at the game. The fans, like me, were not happy for the injury itself, but rather that it meant a change. No one is happy Cassel got hurt. People are happy however, that him getting hurt means there was going to be a change. Gil, if you don't get the difference then yer a major league idiot. And your shtick of continually bringing me up in the hopes of making me look bad is tired. You mis-characterize me for what reason? I honestly don't get it.

Glad I didn't disappoint you then and your initials made it in. I don't make you look bad. Your approach to being pleased about injuries does that all by itself.

You truly are dense. Not going to get into this yet again....or maybe I will.

I'll say this yet again:

What I want is for my backup to be the starter. Period. It can be for any reason. It can be because the starter is being outplayed and gets benched, it can be because he quits to smoke pot, it can be because he got suspended, and yes, it can be because of an injury.

To extrapolate that to me rooting for injuries is inaccurate and misrepresents how I feel about things. But ultimately, yes, I want the starter to no longer be the starter if I have the backup.

Gil, I generally like you, but good grief already. When is enough enough with you? And Chester, I haven't interacted with you much on these boards, but I have no problem with you either. I think you both need to not zero in on the injury aspect of things and look at the broader concept, which is simply that if I have the backup, I want him to be the starter instead. Injuries are a fact of the game so they stand out as a means of that happening, but I could care less why my guy got his chance, just that he gets it. Injuries are simply the most likely way for that to happen.

If all that makes me a bad guy, so be it. I wish the perception of me were different, because believe it or not, how anonymous people on the web view me does matter to me. That's said, fantasy football is, to me, a game I'm trying to win and my take on wanting my backup to be the starter is not going to change. And frankly, I'd be surprised if everyone playing this game wouldn't want their backup to be "the guy" instead. Why wouldn't you?
