Not_A_Guru
Okay, so Belichick kept the ball away from Welker the first couple weeks, and noticed he really did need him after going 1-2 and Hernandez going down. Now, Welker came out and 'joked' (I do think he was joking) that it's nice to stick it to his head coach every once in a while. People who have followed Belichick have compared this to Randy Moss and say Welker calling him out is a big mistake. So my question is: Is this a big of a deal as people are making it out to be? Belichick likes to hold grudges but it seems really difficult to leave Welker's production out of the offense. What do you think?

White lightning
I'm not looking to "freak you out" but I traded him and Ridley for Roddy for the following reasons. When Hernandez and Edleman were healthy in week 1 Welker had 3 catches for 14yds. In week 2 he was benched for Edleman and didn't see the field till Hernandez went down with the ankle injury. So I was looking to move him before Hernandez and Edleman came back.

Tripleshot
I think the Pats plan for this year was to use Edelman and Hernandez to see if they could replace Welker's production before making any decisions on bringing him back. Then the injuries hit and they still don't know if they can do that. I think they have absolutely no problem letting Welker go at the end of the year, unless they can resign him on their terms. I don't expect it, as someone will pay Welker more unless Welker gives them a home team discount(not likely methinks). Truth be told, they play better with Welker. ForzaPackers
I just got Welker in my team, traded for Spiller. Not sure now whether to try and trade Welker away with Hernandez back from injury. Might try and get Eric Decker, Denver have a very favourable schedule

darin3
Welker will go out and catch 10 balls for 100 yards - again - this week just to prove you wrong.
Can't Win
I don't own welker but it seems like a concern.. Do the pats need welker to win? Prob not.. The pats have 2 very good RBs getting a lot of carries as well. If I did own welker I'd be moving him but not giving him away..

Bronco Billy
Yes. Freak out. Welker will see this response and start playing better. Seriously though, it appears that there is a concerted effort to reduce Welker's impact on the NE O. I have a feeling that it has to do with NE determining that they will not pay top dollar for him and plan on parting ways with him next season. I think that's the same reason why we're also seeing more of Jones in GB (when Jennings was healthy he was moved to the slot for Jones to start on the outside) - aside from Jennings' injury, I think GB is also planning on not paying him top dollar and is readying for life without him next year. I also think that's why NE more than tripled Salas' salary this week (to I believe $1 over the minimum) to keep him on the NE Practice Squad rather than allow another team to claim him (who I would guess was STL). So for what it is worth, I believe Welker will continue with his diminshed performance to the end of the season - barring multiple injury issues in NE - and well below his draft value. ETA - BTW, I am not asserting that Salas is the next Welker in NE. I do believe that he will be given the opportunity to fill the position next season though, probably in competiton with Edelman at least. NE is making certain that he is on their roster, and I'd wouldn't be surprised by a call up later this season. Salas may or may not take advantage of that opportunity, as is the same with Edelman and anyone else brought in to compete to start in the slot for NE, but whomever wins the spot should have some very good FF potential. Personally I think Salas has some great uptapped potential in him, but it remains to be seen if that is true. bdom11
No need to freak out. Welker is still brady's favorite target
Tripleshot
He's the favorite target of the Legion of Boom too. He took a couple of hellacious hits - and got up and kept playing. The dude is tough as nails. Why are the Pats so hot on letting him leave after this year?
Chavez
Why are the Pats so hot on letting him leave after this year? Because I believe that Belicheck's assessment is that Welker is great with the Pats, average elsewhere. I'd be inclined to agree with that, as well - sure, if he goes somewhere else, I'm sure he'll be fine - say, 70-80 catches - but only for 900 yds and 4 or 5 tds. His skill set meshes perfectly with what NE does. And I also think Belicheck believes that so long as they've got Gronknandez at TE, they can make do with iffy WRs - Welker would be nice, but the offense can probably run just fine without him. We'll see how it plays out.
Tripleshot
But he still has value to their team. Seems to me they didn't look as good before Hernandez got hurt. Are they hell bent on waving goodbye, or would they resign him, just at their price, and not Welker's?

Ideally (for the Pats), you let him walk and he gets no decent offers and comes back for chump change. And then he catches 120 passes and you win the SB. bostonsoxandy
as a brady owner i'm concerned about the patriots running the ball more and more. I'd sell Brady high after this week if you could. They pass 60+ times this week against Seattle and still lose, I would imagine they will emphasize establishing the run in the next few games as top priority. Nobody knows for sure what the plan is for Welker but front office has made it clear (belichick) that Welker is disposable. They replace him with Edelman and don't lose a beat. I think some other team will give Welker a cushy contract and the Patriots won't even think of matching anything. They want Welker on 1-year deals ideally.
