My friend dropped him this week after drafting him in the third round lol. Its his first season playing.

Another friend picked him up and I bet him 20$ that Gates wont score more than 12 points ppr. (He hasn't all season)

Looks like you're buying dinner and drinks.

After Maclin and Nelson showing up, I have a feeling Gates is going to join the coming out party. He is a tremendous athlete who in my opinion set the bar for the TE position. He has shown a lot of heart playing through some tough and lingering injuries. I am speaking not as a fantasy owner but just as someone who admires athleticism and perseverance.

See I just don't get this statement or even how a bunch of people can really feel this way. Tony G is the one who came out and "set the bar" in my opinion. I will never understand how he doesn't get talked about more for the great TE he is. HE is the best TE of this generation.

Here's Tony at #41 on the ALL TIME LIST:

Gates comes in at 75.

Gonzalez - 1192 Rec 13,768 yds and 99 TD's. 12 Pro Bowls and 5 time 1st team all Pro.

Gates - 606 Rec 7926 yds and 72 TD's 8 Pro Bowls and 3 1st team all Pro.

It's just funny to me when I see how people talked about Sharpe during Tony's prime years and then towards the end of his career it was Gates. Lets face it, he's going to own nearly every record by a TE. Just go ahead and notch another Pro Bowl and 1st team all pro with the way he's playing this year.

Hey Tony, just keep breaking those records bud. It sure would be a treat to see you get a SB ring.

Hat Trick,

Yeah not sure why so many credit Gates with setting the bar, maybe he just got more coverage on TV in games or by the media. Gonzo has 6 years/seasons on him, and was doing this in KC before Gates was even in the league.

And Gonzo has done it more consistently, and been more successful later in his career than Gates.

If we take their career numbers you show above and look at per season avg (16 seasons for Gonzo, 10 for Gates) we get

Gonzalez - 74.5 Rec 860 yds and 6.2 TD's (Pro Bowls 75% of the time 1st team all Pro 31%)

Gates - 60.6 Rec 793 yds and 7.2 TD's (Pro Bowls 80%, 1st team all Pro 30%)

As I initially thought, Gates only advantage was more TD, and if he had some off years over the last 3-5 that means his earlier years were even higher. So maybe people recognize him more simply because of more scores (on average per season).

Overall I agree, Gonzo is as good or better, did it first but get's less recognition.
