keggerz
I understand the exhilaration of winning super bowls and all that, but do you really think Gruden at this point in his life would leave the millions he makes for "working" one night a week to go back and try to revive a struggling team, for presumably the same or close to the same amount of money as they're making now? Is his coach's ego really that big? Bigger than Cower's or Dungee's, who also _haven't_ made the leap back into the daily, weekly, up until 4am every day reviewing tape and game prep grind? I agree with Kamala above who said Gruden seems happy. Also even though these guys are presumably super-ego maniacs, I still think they have in the back of their mind, what if I fail at the second go around and my legend is tarnished? Vermiel is the only guy I can think of who has ever done this before, and that was different for a variety of reasons. There may be other guys I'm blanking on now. Even more ridiculous in my mind are the SEC school fans who think Gruden might be coming to save Tennessee or even more laughably Auburn. just because you only see him on tv one night a week doesn't mean that is all he works. There is a ton of prep those guys do. I will give you that it most likely doesn't take the time commitment coaching does, but it is much more thn you aregiving it credit for. stethant
I don't think he comes back. I agree with this. Remember Gruden was fired from the Bucs and his schtick was old and tired by the time he left. Not sure why it would be any fresher years later. So the guy who the Bucs fired is now the savior of the Eagles, or some other team? Reid's lost his team but that's pretty much exactly what happened to Gruden the last go round. I don't think this is the droid you're looking for. If he does come back, buyer's remorse should take about 1 season.
Qball86
It must be an oversight but nobody has hoped for Jim Schwartz to come their way yet. Or were you all hoping to keep it a secret to avoid the bidding war for him? Sneaky... We'd miss him but would understand.... I can see how it came off like that but I didn't mean to say that broadcasting or being a media personality takes no time commitment. I have no idea what kind of time commitment it does require, but I do feel safe in saying it is no where near the prep filled, stressful, competitive nature of coaching in the NFL. tazinib1
ummmm...why on earth would Jim Schwartz be available? That would be almost as shocking as firing your HC 5 games into the season with a 6 game homestand looming. Of course, a guy named PHIL might be involved. stevegrab
Work load - sure its more than one day or work doing the broadcast job, but no where near as much as a head coach, and certainly a lot less stress ego - if we're looking at it from the ego stand point, what strokes your ego more being on national TV once a week broadcasting a game, or being a head coach of a football that has far less exposure (unless a big team like DAL). money - probably not much more in coaching than broadcasting, and there isn't much chance he suddenly gets fired from MNF Like a few others here I just don't buy it that he is returning, same for Cowher and others. I think if they had wanted to they would have already. Or it will take the perfect gig, a team already loaded with talent, in a big market, with a lot of personnel control (that rules out at least DAL unless Jones steps aside). Could one of them return to coaching some day, sure, but the talk every season that one of them well just gets old.

After hearing a lot of grudens "analysis" I think he just rolls into the stadium 2 hours before game time and wings the whole thing.

Plus he still live in Tampa which is a pretty good indicator that he wants to stay "retired".
Can't Win
As a Philly fan, I would love for Bill Cowher to coach this team in 2013. This team is cottonelle soft and needs new life. This underperforming team needs better coaching. Gruden will be great as well but I don't see him leaving the booth.
ebartender
With Howie Roseman just signing a 4-5 contract extension in Philly to be the GM I doubt the Eagles go after a big name coach. I see them hiring a top NFL coordinator or college coach who is fine with Roseman calling the shots.
