The Texans are favored by 16 points over the visiting Jags. That has to be the highest spread I have seen this year and in a while. Has there been anything higher?

I certainly don't recall seeing anything higher than that myself; I believe the previous high that I recall was New England by 14 over Arizona earlier in Foxboro ... and we all know how that ended up.

In about 10 years of handicapping, I don't recall any that were anywhere close to that for an NFL game. Any given sunday and everything...

 

But Vegas isn't just about predicting outcomes, they also have interest in as equal money on each side as possible, so obviously it has just as much to do with the perception that the Jags are really that bad, going up against a team that's that good.

In NE's 2007 16-0 season, they were favored by 24 vs Philadelphia. It was a close game iirc.

 

Also way back around '94 when SF was the best and Cincy was awful, the niners were 23 point favorites (they didn't cover).

I have a spread sheet that I cut and pasted some stuff from that I will upload into google docs for anyone that wants to see it but here is what I have until then.

 

Since 1985 there have been 22 instances where a team was favored by 16 points.

14 times they covered

2 times they lost straight up

 

3 of them happened from 85-87

of those 3 only one covered and 1 lost straight up

 

8 of them happened in the 90s

7 covered (none lost straight up)

 

11 of them happened from 2000-2011(I didn't look at this year since I haven't updated my sheet for 2012 yet)

6 covered and 1 lost straight up.

Nice to see CLE only on that list twice and they covered the spread once. They got blown out both times, however.
