Commissioner Dilemma

I have a commissioner dilemma in one of my leagues and wanted to see what you guys feel needs to be done. Here is the scenario:

Tie Breaker rule for games stated Total Offense vs. Total Offense then Defense vs. Defense. I interpret Total Offense to include kicker points.

However we have had two ties this season, one this week and one in Week 9. In Week 9 in my opinion a mistake was made and the winner was decided on Total Offense minus kicker. No one questioned it when the decision was made. Sever playoff implications ride on this tiebreaker for a few teams.

The question is do we stay consistent and do this one the same way as the previous and make a second mistake based on the rule or do we state the rule is this and then fix both games?

My personal feeling is it needs to be right based on the rules regardless if it requires fixing a mistake from a couple of weeks ago. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Tough call.

How has it been handled in past years? I ask trying to determine if precedent was set prior to Week 9 of this year on how the rule should be interpreted.

If it hasn't come up previously, I think for this year you should stick with the precedent set and exclude kickers from this week's tiebreak procedure.

If it has come up in previous years and was handled including kickers, then I do think it makes sense to break the ties as it has been done in the past and include kickers in the tiebreak, despite the potential implications of changing the week 9 result (potential change in waiver order in past weeks, etc.)

In the offseason, you should clarify the rule to properly define total offense so that the rule is truly defined and not being determined based on opinion (or do away with the tiebreaker altogether, as there is nothing wrong with regular season ties)

Thanks for the answers ,this is the first year we have had any ties since the rule was changed to not allow ties. We used to allow ties to stand except in the playoffs. So there was no precedence set prior to this year in week 9. However in week 4 we had what we thought would be a tie but when the NFL changed Jamal Charles stats it broke the tie. There was a post by the other commissioner stating who the winner was and it said the winner was including kickers.

The problem with the precedence in Week 9 was whether it was done consciously Was it ever stated or pointed out that the kicker's points were disregarded? If it was at the time and no one complained, then you have a true precedence that should be followed for this season.

If no one pointed it out in Week 9 then no one knows whether it was an oversight or an error meaning that no one double-checked the numbers to see if the commissioner got it right. If this second scenario is true then you have grounds for an argument. A mistake in Week 9 is not precedence for another mistake. A mistake in Week 9 does not make the rule book as it is written all of a sudden invalid.

I don't understand why tiebreakers are used during the regular FF season. What's wrong with a tie? I always think by having regular season tiebreakers, teams are getting wins that they didn't earn. I believe it ties for the regular season and tiebreakers only for the playoffs.

I would probably say correct everything vs. doing it wrong a second time. By wrong I mean in a manner not consistent with the league rules.

Agree, especially after reading the bolded part below

Just to clarify, he did not say in his post this includes kickers. What he posted was Team A is the winner with a score of xxx and if you go back and add up these points it includes kickers.

There was no post in week 9 stating who the winner is or how it was determined. It is the post in Week 4 or whatever week that was that makes me think it should all be corrected now. No matter who it upsets, although my fellow commissioners do not want to rock the boat I should say and just go with the same way it was done in Week 9.

Thanks for clarifying, its pretty much the same. If the score mentioned includes kickers and the rule doesn't say it excludes kickers, then week 9 was just a simple mistake. I think all game results should be changed, you cannot worry about waiver priorities and other stuff at this point because that cannot all be undone and redone properly.
