Brent is the starting nosetackle while Brown was a LB on the practice squad. Another sad, senseless Saturday

Josh Brent arrested after crash kills Cowboys player

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was arrested Saturday on an intoxication manslaughter charge connected to the death of Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown Jr., Irving, Texas, police confirmed to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Irving police confirmed Brent is being processed on the charge, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000. Police said Brent is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday.

According to a report released by Irving police, Brent was behind the wheel of a speeding vehicle after 2 a.m., when it hit a curb, causing it to flip at least once before coming to rest in the middle of a service road. When officers arrived on the scene, Brent was responsive and able to speak. Brown, 25, was unresponsive and transferred to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Cowboys confirmed Brown's death as the team prepared for Sunday's matchup against theCincinnati Bengals.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement of condolence:

"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," the statement read. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."

Brent and Brown were college teammates at Illinois and were living together, a team source told Rapoport.

Brent is in his third season with the Cowboys. A promising nose tackle, he had been in line to start for injured veteran Jay Ratliff on Sunday.

Brown was signed to the Cowboys' practice squad on Oct. 24. He was previously on the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad before his Oct. 20 release.

Absolutely awful!

I've said it before and I'll say it again- Drugs, alcohol, guns and poor decision-making/stupidity just don't mix.

Single car accident, speeding, flipped and rolled 900 yds, as per Sirius NFL Network moments ago. Brent, not the starter at the beginning of the season, but had an opportunity with Ratliff and Coleman injured. Makes me wonder what goes through these guys heads when Brent has a chance to show is potential, but mindlessly wastes it in poor judgement. He has a prior DUI and now he may never get a chance at the NFL again. I just don't get it.

There's no way it rolled 900 yards. Not that it really matters.

That is what I thought when I heard it. They also mentioned something about the car being on fire, too.

Quoted from an article...

Brent’s Mercedes traveled about 900 feet after hitting the curb in what is a 45 mph zone. Brown was unresponsive when help arrived and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Brent failed a sobriety test and had blood drawn at a hospital. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charge putting much more than his career in the NFL in jeopardy.

I think the Sirius guys had yards on their mind.

The NFL has a service where they will pick up and drive intoxicated players free of charge, anywhere, anytime. It is time these players use this service.

So sad to see one life lost, and another ruined from a bad decision. :(

Not much good happens after midnight. One of the pre-games shows mentioned that NFL players often do not call for car service because they don't want anybody to know they were out late drinking.

These young men have been exalted by some many people their whole lives and then are given more money than they know what do do with .. we really shouldn't be surprised that they are irresponsible.

I was involved in a single-vehicle accident in 2004 that claimed the life of a friend. The guy driving - who was a good friend of my friend - was similarly booked and subsequently imprisoned for intoxication manslaughter.

So, I certainly got emotional when I heard of this.
