whomper
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones promised back on Jan. 2 that Dallas would be making some organizational changes and on Tuesday the Cowboys made a big one when they fired second-year defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. "I can assure you guys -- I can assure our fans -- it's going to be very uncomfortable for the next few weeks and months at Valley Ranch," Jones said in a recent radio interview. In two seasons as the Cowboys DC, Ryan put together defenses that ranked 14th (2011) and 19th (2012) in the league. Prior to his two-year stint in Dallas, Ryan was a defensive coordinator with both the Browns (2009-10) and the Raiders (2004-08). Ryan's status with the team had been tenuous since the Cowboys season ended after their 28-18 season-ending loss to Washington on Dec. 30. In that game, Redskins rookie RB Alfred Morris ran for a career-high 200 yards and three touchdowns. A win would have sent the Cowboys to the playoffs. The home of the Super Bowl Watch the Super Bowl, February 3, 2013 on CBS and CBSSports.com Complete coverage It wasn't an easy season to be the Cowboys defensive coordinator. Ryan had to work with an injury depleted unit and coach Jason Garrett even acknowledged that in his season-ending press conference on Dec. 31. "If you think about the number of guys we lost on defense -- starting, marquee players who are just simply out -- and the other guys who are battling through injuries and the challenges he had bringing guys from the practice squad up from off the street and on our team and literally playing them two days later... I thought he did a really good job managing the situation," Garrett said at the time. "He never blinked." Ryan may have been fired just a few hours too late to join his brother Rex in New York. Earlier on Tuesday, the New York Daily News reported the Jets DB coach Dennis Thurman would be promoted to defensive coordinator. Even if Ryan doesn't end up with the Jets, he doesn't expect to be out of work long. "I'll be out of work for like five minutes," Ryan told ESPNDallas.com. stevegrab
Wow, didn't see that coming. I'd take him back in CLE as DC with whoever we get as HC (if Jauron doesn't stay). Who is Jerry going to hire to replace him (must be fun to be the HC and have so little say in your staff).
ThatDude
Jerry has lost it completely. Given what Rob had to work with I thought it was pretty good. Garrett should have been the one fired
HowboutthemCowboys
Does this mean Dallas will bring more than 4 guys once in a while now?
keggerz
Wouldn't mind him in Philly. Also think he'd be a good fit in Buffalo too.
Double Agent
Had to be off field issues. This makes no sense.
Puddy
I can only hope he gets a year off. It would be nice to watch a game without the 25 cuts to his flowing locks on the sidelines.
flemingd
Had to be off field issues. This makes no sense. Yeah, 'cause all of Jerrah's decisions make sense.
whomper
I think he got absolutely Teab Bagged the last game of the season. Not once could he put anything in motion to remotely stop or slow down what the skins were doing in that running scheme. Of course I know personel plays a part but come on. You have to improvise and adapt, heartbreak ridge style. I am surprised to see him go though . I feel a little indifferent about it. Its just Jerry trying to act like he is doing something and he let go of a guy that could have been an asset and was pretty decimated with injuries

When I read the story you posted and how Garrett gave him a pretty good review it was clear to me that it was Jerry's call and was not about having the best coach. Who will want to work for this guy, soon their coaches will be on par with those of the Raiders under the last few years of Al's leadership.

Andy Reid should go get him, quickly. 1 top 10 defense in his career and without looking again, I believe several in the 20's. Most yards Dallas ever gave up in a season. And you let Alfred kill you when you knew it was coming. And coming. Ridiculous. Where's the blitz? You trade up for Claiborne and give Carr a bunch of money and rush 3 or 4 guys all year. QB's were able to sit back there and pick them apart. See ya Rob..

stethant
Was going to write that Ryan wasn't the problem in Dallas, and so firing him isn't really the solution to much. Then I saw some quotes in the classic Ryan family style and thought, maybe good riddance? "I inherited a team that was 31st in the league in defense and made them better," Ryan told ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon. "I (expletive) made them a hell of a lot better. I'll be out of work for like five minutes." Why do they keep hiring these guys? He's a good (at best) but not great defensive coordinator. He took a 21st ranked D and they were 15th the next year, falling back to 19th in 2012 with a ton of injuries (according to info from Whompers post). I'd say that is pretty damn good. What puppet is Jerry going to hire that will be better. You think he'll find a great DC that is willing to put up with his BS. Have they even interviewed anybody yet? Sure Ryan has a big mouth and ego, that is a big reason why JJ got rid of him, because its his team, and he's the mouth and ego of the Cowboys. CowboysDiehard
Yeah, 4-3 is could be a good thing. Tampa 2--we'll need more of a mean streak at LB and on the DL to pull it off. Also, here is an interesting take on why Ryan was fired: http://www.star-tele...igan-after.html Edited January 11, 2013 by CowboysDiehard
General Itals
A 4-3 Tampa 2? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. The Cowboys have press CB's in Claiborne and Carr and they certainly don't have ball-hawking safties. Where does Demarcus Ware play? As a hand on the ground DE? tazinib1
I don't think Kiffin will rush into implementing the Tampa 2 in Dallas. Even though he made it famous, the Boys just don't have the personal, unless Jerry goes on a big spending spree. And its being reported the Rams are interested in Rob Ryan for the DC position.
