Wolverines Fan
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/30/report-justin-blackmon-suspended-four-games/ Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon finished strong in 2012, catching 25 passes and scoring two touchdowns in the final four games of the season. It looks like we’re going to have to wait a while to find out if he picks up where he left off. Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report that Blackmon has been suspended for four games by the league for violating league policy and the NFL later announced that it was specifically a violation of the Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Blackmon led the Jaguars with 64 catches last season and that closing flourish raised hopes that the fifth overall pick of the 2012 Draft was going to continue developing into a top-flight receiver. Blackmon will still be able to practice with the Jags and play in preseason games, so this won’t totally halt that progress but there’s no denying that it’s a wrench in the plans for a player with two drunk driving arrests before he signed his rookie deal with the Jags. The Jaguars play the Chiefs, Raiders, Seahawks and Colts in the first four games of the 2013 season.
DMD
Tough loss for JAC but one he brought on himself.
Papajohn
It must be step number two in their plan to get the number one pick next season. Step one was not drafting another QB and going with Gabbert.
DMD
It must be step number two in their plan to get the number one pick next season. Step one was not drafting another QB and going with Gabbert. In retrospect, that was astounding.
efi4eye
Blackmon is 2-for-2 messing up in the offseason. Doesn't look good for the guy, he better get his act together
stevegrab
4 game suspension, that is not a first offense. Not good for a guy that's only been in the NFL one season.

BearBroncos
4 game suspension, that is not a first offense. Not good for a guy that's only been in the NFL one season. I read that the NFL was considering a 1 year suspension so what ever he did was not pretty. I suspect a little more than just substance violation is what I'm thinking. flemingd
This saves me from myself. He's the kind of guy I draft way too early normally.
flemingd
Jax was smart when wording his contact. $7.1m DUI.... what a dumbass Just for clarity, this doesn't actually cost him money at this point. He loses the guarantees in his contract, which include a portion of his signing bonus that they deferred. He's definitely much more at risk, but no money lost yet aside from 4 game checks, which will be "only" $289k. He does see about $10 million go from guaranteed to non-guaranteed. stevegrab
I read that the NFL was considering a 1 year suspension so what ever he did was not pretty. I suspect a little more than just substance violation is what I'm thinking. I didn't remember the DUI, local sports mentioned that as if it was the first violation. If they were considering a year, one has to wonder what he did and what other prior violations may have happened that we are not aware of. darin3
This saves me from myself. He's the kind of guy I draft way too early normally. You do? I tend to stay away from young WRs with turrrrible QBs. As a flier in a later round as a backup? SURE... but drafting him earlier than you should? Why not just flush your money down the toilet? flemingd
You do? I tend to stay away from young WRs with turrrrible QBs. As a flier in a later round as a backup? SURE... but drafting him earlier than you should? Why not just flush your money down the toilet? I do. It's rarely so dramatic as flushing my money, and it frequently works out pretty well. Percy Harvin didn't have me flushing much the last couple of years. Neither did pre-2011 Calvin Johnson with the debacle they had at QB. And had I been patient with Blackmon last year I would have been rewarded late in the season. I just tend to overvalue the physical talent a guy has, and anticipate that the QB situation will improve - either by the guy stepping up or by them finding someone else. This is the NFL after all, the best in the world, and these guys have a tendency to get better over time. If they don't, coaches have a tendency to find someone else in their stead. Henne completely changed Blackmon's value last year, and knowing they have him as a fallback would have kept my confidence high this year as well. keggerz
Some interesting numbers on Blackmon. This is all for weeks 1-10 (when Gabbert was under center, he got hurt in week 11 and threw only 2 passes) Blackmon: 59 Targets 59 Fantasy Points 1.0 fantasy points/target Now let's compare him to Shorts (again, weeks 1-10 with Gabbert under center) Shorts 58 Targets 108.7 Fantasy Points 1.9 fantasy points/target Now I know you are probably thinking well Blackmon was a rookie and didn't play much to start the season... Blackmon: 513 snaps played (wks 1-10) Shorts: 350 snaps played (wks 1-10) Blackmon: targeted 11.5% of snaps played Shorts: targeted 16.6% of snaps played Now remember, this is all with Gabbert as the starting QB, something he will most likely be all year long, baring injury of course....reason being is that new GM Dave Caldwell and new HC Gus Bradley didn't draft Gabbert and are just going to see what they have...if it doesn't work it isn't their necks on the line....they get a free reboot next year...so, looking at the numbers what I see is that Shorts has much more upside and that Blackmon actually represents a fair amount of risk with Gabbert as the starting QB...but hey, the kid is suspended for the 1st four games so we won't even need to do any further comparisons until well into the season. tazinib1
Coach Gus Bradley said he's giving suspended WR Justin Blackmon a clean slate.Blackmon has two DUI arrests and a four-game substance-abuse violation on his resume since 2010. But none of that occurred while Bradley was in contact with the 2012 No. 5 overall pick. The pair are having regular conversations as Blackmon tries to stabilize his life and career. "He's never done anything wrong with me. It'd be different if I was talking to him and I didn't feel like we were connecting at all. I do feel a connection," Bradley said. Missing $ much?
