What is your favorite aspect of fantasy football?

I personally love to ponder on this question from time to time and would love to hear other's responses. I hope this turns into a really thoughtful thread about fantasy and what specific aspect (or aspects) really made you so passionate for fantasy football.

For me, I love how it mimics economics. Even though it may seem a little bonkers, it really is just like the stock market for me, but a whole lot more accessible and fun. I love the concept of selling high, buying low, and trying to find great value while mitigating risk just like I imagine a classic stockbroker picking stocks does. I think, by playing fantasy football, it has taught me a way of thinking where nothing is a certainty and nothing is set in stone. It is such a dynamic and rapidly-changing game that it has really taught me to try my best not to be overly confident and the value of not being ignorant.

Maybe that is rambling but I would love to hear what other people have to say as far as what drew you to fantasy in the first place or what made you stick with fantasy for so long.

The competition and taking money from people who think the know what their talking about. Well, assuming they play in leagues for real money and not just $20 against random people on ESPN and Yahoo

The crazy thing is that after 23 years of playing and 17 years of The Huddle, I still get all stupid excited before a draft. I like most everything about it, but to me the draft is the best. It is addicting fun with ups and downs and surprises and disappointments for usually 20 rounds. Live ones are the best too.

I've been a football fan forever, I've always loved the strategy. I started coaching little league 4 years ago when one of the coaches asked me if I was interested in joining their FFL. I didn't know anything about FF but I joined and I was hooked instantly.

The smack talk, watching all the games instead of just the Chiefs, screaming with joy when listening to a game on the radio..doing fast math when a guy scores a TD, sweating MNF when my opponent has 2 players and I have none and I'm up...I'm totally addicted.

Entering my 5th year, I've started to do my own rankings, I'm still so new to this but I want to win. I heard about this site from a friend and I'm finding a lot of useful information, I do get tired of reading negative postings but I guess thats always going to happen. I took on another team in another league, I'm not a hardcore player but I can see how easily that can happen!

In closing, fantasy football has taken a sport I already loved and injected with HGH...

I got hooked almost immediately. Fantasy football is so much different than soccer manager, cycling manager and so on. Every fantasy game in Europe is completely boring because of the following:

Every player can be owned by every owner because you start out with a fixed amount of money. There is no draft.

There is no head to head format that works. We tried it with soccer manager and it was absolut crap.

There is no playoffs format that works. Once again using soccer manager as an example. It makes no sense to play for 35 rounds and then have a playoff for two or three weeks.

There is just so much more excitement in fantasy football and so much more preparation. The real game and fantasy football just fit so damn well together. The stats and scoring in NFL makes perfect sense for the scoring in fantasy. That is not the case at all in soccer manager or other manager games I have played.

Just being in the game coming down to the end knowing your going to have as thrilling win or a heart breaking loss. It is the heart breaking losses you remember for many years while many victories are forgotten quickly. It is that thrill of winning and losing that makes this game what it is. To just be there and feel it is what makes this game what it is today.

Top three:

3. Having that sleeper pick I made back on draft day come through and make the difference in a close game, giving me the "W" for the week (trading for a player who later becomes fantasy gold to help me in the playoffs, when the owner I traded with felt like he got the best of me at the time works too).

2. Settling in front of the tube on Sunday morning, grabbing the laptop, setting the line-ups, and settling in for a glorious day of watching the greatest sport on earth while competing in the greatest hobby on earth.

......and coming in at #1 - Draft day(s) at my locals - always like Christmas morning as a kid all over again.

Agree, drafts always excite me until someone does something stupid like draft Matt Ryan and Mathew Stafford with their first two picks!

This right here the feeling every Sunday (not morning for me though as I get up at 11 AM) but I get to the computer at Noon and I re-check all my line ups that I sat Saturday night and then at 1 PM boom RED ZONE CHANNEL! A furious 6+ hours of action while watching the computer for play by play every game. Love that feeling every Sunday.

Been a few years (sadly) since I've done the "high stakes" leagues, but draft day for those was always amazing. Heck, the weekend chock full of rankings talk, beer drinking and overall debauchery can't be matched.

Other than that, just your average Sunday getting up, checking Twitter and watching pre-game stuff.... double-checking lineups and then just watching football all day and watching MFL live scoring.... capping off with a Sunday night game (usually with a pizza). Monday nights haven't really been the same since taking this new job. :(

The thrill of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat... the list goes on.

On a more serious note, I pretty much agree with most/all of the above. Early on, a big part of it, for me, was the live draft experience. There was a period of 5-6 years where I did three live drafts every year, with three different groups of friends. Two of those leagues have since folded, and I've been to one live draft for the third in the past 10 years, I think. I now typically draft remotely (I introduced the league to MFL 4-5 years ago).

First and foremost, I enjoy the competition... both with friends and family (I started a keeper league with family/friends about five years ago) and FF junkies like myself, most of which I met here. The league with friends and family is a means to not only compete with each other, but also a way of staying in touch. I have a couple of friends in the keeper league who I honestly would have lost track of 5+ years ago, if not for FF. But, because we share this league, we chat/text/email a few times a year. In that league, we play for cash, but it's more about the bragging rights than anything else.

Same goes for the BOTH leagues, for the most part. The money from winning something is a nice bonus, but it's all about winning against top-notch competition. I've been fortunate to win a few leagues in the past couple of years, and it's more than offset the cost of joining a bunch of leagues. But, if I hadn't won any, I'd still probably play in all of the same leagues. I like the variety, as well as the different groups of Huddlers that each league consists of.

As for the specific parts that I enjoy, the draft has always been one of my favorite times in just about any league. Whether it's a 2-hour live draft on MFL, a live draft in somebody's garage, a 40-round IDP dynasty draft that takes three weeks, or a 10-day 8-round rookie draft, they're a big part of what keeps me interested, and the part that I admittedly look forward to the most. The redraft/live drafts have so much anticipation leading up to those first few picks... It really is exciting, even after doing them for 20 years. In the dynasty world, it's all about wheeling and dealing... Trading picks for cash, trading to move up, trading to move down, trading for future picks, etc. That's what truly makes it fun... Not just making trades, but the endless negotiating back and forth, to get a deal done.

The season itself is obviously part of it... Setting each lineup, usually 2-3 times throughout the week. Going back through everything Sunday morning, making those last-minute gut-wrenching decisions that could make or break your week (or your season). Then, sitting back and watching the games. Admittedly, I don't spend as much time doing that part as I used to... It's hard to get away for 10 hours of football on Sundays, with a family. But, I catch as much action as I can, and the DVR is a FF junkie's best friend. After a 2-year hiatus from DirecTV, I'm back with them this year, and am looking forward to the new "genie" that can record 5 programs simultaneously. :)

Lastly, I've been in too many close calls to count, when it comes down to the final weekend of the season, trying to make the playoffs, etc. I can remember a Monday night game from over 10 years ago, where I needed 1 catch and 10 yards from Marty Booker. He didn't catch a single pass all night, and I was devestated. It had seemed like such a lock, prior to the game. Then there was last year, when I needed an extra 3 yards from Witten to reach the finals. Lost something like 146.8 to 146.55, only to crush my 3rd place opponent (and outscore both teams in the final). Those hurt, and I seem to remember them more vividly than the ones that worked out, for some reason. But, I've had plenty of good breaks as well, and some of my FF titles did not come easily. Either way, though, it's those moments that are a big part of what keeps me hooked. Watching a close game is one thing. Watching a close game, where another catch or another 10 yards wins me cash or a BOTH title, is when it gets crazy.

Used to be this

The live drafts in both my locals is probably my favorite aspect of FF. It's like a hugh party all night long.

and this

Now, I'm lucky to watch more than about 2-3 hours worth, and live drafts are mostly a thing of the past.

Some things stay the same, regardless of where the draft is though....

My BOTH league dynasty/idp rookie drafts. My redraft leagues have become really boring in comparison, and I hardly pay attention to them anymore.

My BOTH league 2012 results? Team one-won the SB. Team two, 2-12 :kicksrock: Team two, I did have a good draft for the future: D. Wilson, Jeffery Alshon, Russell Wilson, Josh Gordon, Derek Wolfe, Rod Streater, Janoris Jenkins :ball:

Haha, I hear that. At least you have two teams that are in completely different stages... it's kinda nice that way, even if one of your teams "sucks". I have 3 dynasties, and each is kind of in a different stage. One of my teams will be a world-beater... it's a 16-team league and the squad I have looks like an 8-team league roster :guns: ... the second was excellent in years past but has suffered due to RFA... still has a chance to win but it'll be tough.... and the third is a pile of poo, but at least I had a great draft.

I'll do redrafts, if only for the "draft" experience. :)
