Zrab11
So here is alittle background. This is our 3rd year as a 8 man league(1st year snake, last year auction) . We are just a bunch of friends who all live in the same city. we take it serious but not too serious. All of us have only been doing fantasy football since like 2005 and we just like to have fun with it but all of us like to win. I am the commissioner and just looking to make the league alittle more competitive as I know a typical 8 man league is basically just starting all studs. And while it has been fun the last 3 years just looking to make it better for owners who put in the time. Here are the league rules at this moment. Which is Pretty standard at the moment. 20$ league buy in 100$-1st place 60$-2nd place 8 man auction 200$budget 16 player roster, 9 starters 7 bench 1QB,2RB,2WR,FLEX(RB,WR),TE,K,DEF Waiver wire is auction style with 100$ budget. So what are your suggestions to make it better? Start 2QB? 3 WR? Looking for any and all suggestions to make the league better. And not looking for the response "add more owners" we want to keep it at 8 league owners. So thanks in advance for any advice.
DMD
Use two flex and make one be RB-WR-TE and the other can be anything - QB-RB-WR-TE-PK-DEF and also use reception points. With 8 team leagues, everyone has a good team. Make it more strategic.
flemingd
I recommend 2 QB, no flex, and limiting add/drops. The supply/demand for QB's is way, way out of whack for 8 man leagues. They are massively devalued and end up being something you can just grab a couple of in rounds 9 and 10. I once waited until my last two picks to draft QB's and ended up with two top 5 QB's that year. This year is worse - Brees Rodgers Newton Manning Ryan Brady Stafford Kaepernick - that's 8, and now Romo, Luck, RGIII, and Wilson are studs but sitting there as backups. In an 8 man league, having flex players kills the trading opportunities. With as strong as the waiver wire is, it's tempting to just pick up a guy that can plug and play on any given week rather than having to give something up for it. Without flex, if you are hurting at RB and there's very little on the wire (you can't afford to start trash in an 8 man league) you are going to spark the issue. If you must flex I recommend 2 RB 2 WR 1 TE and one WR/TE flex only but I recommend 2 RB 3 WR 1 TE no flex. Limiting add/drops makes every single decision count. You can't just pick up 3-4 players every week since the wire is so loaded and keep whichever is best. We do 9 pickups for the entire season per team (that's separate from IR and other transactions for bye/injury). You might want to pick up Randall Cobb, but Heath Miller (who was the #2 TE last year after week 6) fills a bigger need - who do you take? Our scoring is standard but with .5 PPR (rounded up) for WR and 1 PPR for TE. There is very little positional advantage, it's all about your matchups, decisions, and having the better actual players rather than just stocking up on X position and dominating with it. I'm Leaning towards these 3 options. Which do you think is the best. 2 QB, 3 RB, 4 WR,2 TE,1 Def, 1 k 13 Starters 11 bench 2 QB, 3 RB,3 WR, 1 Flex(TE,RB,WR) 1 TE, 1 Def, 1 K, 12 starters 10 bench 1 QB 3 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE , 1 Def, 1 Kicker 12 Startes 12 Bench or is there a even better line up? I want to get to around 180-200 players drafted as to keep the waiver wires free of too many studs. I Wanna make some changes to the league to make it more competitive but I also don't want to make it drastically different as no one in this league is a pro. I'm also thinking of limiting how many people you can pick up during the whole year. Thinking of making is 20 players a year. As we picked up an average of 24 players the last two seasons as a league.. Is 20 still too many? Should I make it smaller? So any more advice would be great

The entire point of limiting add/drops is to make the decisions count. Rosters that large will remove those decisions. When you have to choose between Cecil Shorts and Mike Williams, that's a tough call. And who are you dropping, Brandon Lloyd? Pierre Garcon? All those guys are on a roster if you're drafting 200 players. Do the math, that's 25 roster spots per team: 4 QB 7 RB 7 WR 4 TE 1 PK 1 DEF 1 backup K/DEF for byes Who's going to be left? And who's going to trade? You'll have 7 RB's to choose from, you'll definitely have a playable guy. I hate league where some team is so horrible that they pick up Joe Blow out of desperation and get 30 from him. That's the great thing about small leagues IMO, all decisions are real ones. You'll lose that with those roster requirements above. I already gave you what I thought was the ideal starting lineup: 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 DEF. Roster size of 15 (we have 16, but we require two TE's be carried) should suffice. Depending on how you do IR, you might just go 16 and drop the 2 TE requirement so there's another flexible roster spot to cover byes. 20 pickups might work if you have no IR. We have a very flexible IR and bye week freebies, so we only do 9 pickups all year, and only one during the playoffs so if you want to save one you can, but no more. No add/drop until after week 2 although you can IR - we draft Labor Day weekend so no real pre-season injury risk.
