kingsofromance
After watching Tate and Foster the past few years and the last game he was in who's better in your opinion? I think right now its Tate and honestly after Week 1 I'm starting to think its not that close. This is from NFL.com. "Tate showed more burst than Foster in the opener, averaging 6.1 yards-per-carry on nine carries. Foster averaged 3.1 yards-per-carry on 18 totes, and he was stuffed on a few short yardage touches. Tate waived Foster off the field at one point, and television cameras caughtFoster upset on the sidelines afterward." It goes on to say that Kubiak wants closer to a 50/50 split... In 6 or so weeks is it possible Tate overtakes Foster as the lead back ala Shawn Alexander overtaking Ricky Waters back in the day or Priest/ Larry Johnson? I have a sneaky feeling on this one. Sure glad I stayed away from Foster.

Scorcher
I have Foster and Tate so however it plays out I will be fine. I think Foster is the better back. You have to remember that Foster missed all of preseason and the majority of training camp while Tate played some preseason games. When Foster shakes the rust he will be the clear lead back. nelsosi
Foster is by far the better, and more complete, back. He looked a little rusty, but I think that's to be expected. The only question is his health. People keep forgetting how good he was in the playoffs last year. He was the Texans best player against Cincy and NE.
nelsosi
I watched the whole game Monday and I think the stats are deceiving. Tate had some nice lanes that weren't there on many of Foster's runs.

Sure glad I stayed away from Foster. I think I want some of what you're smokin'. I'm no Foster apologist and was in the "draft Tate" camp for sure this season, but this is just bull-hooey. Look at Foster's stats for the past few seasons.... they're off the charts. Yes, Tate is a solid runner but to compare this situation to the Watters/Alexander or the Johnson/Holmes situations is pretty misguided. Those were situations where the incumbent was starting to show their age. Foster is 27. Sure, the guy has shown that he may be on the injury prone side but he continues to play and put up video game like numbers. Tate, as I mentioned before, is no slouch. But consider he's coming in with fresh legs and is fighting for more carries. And he's a FA in 2014. I will say, though, that Foster looked sluggish and rusty against the Chargers while Tate flashed big time ability. But given Foster's track record, I think it would be premature to write this off as a "passing of the torch" situation. Lord knows I've been wrong before, though.

nelsosi
I'm not sure that 'injury prone' is a fair term to use for Foster. Other than 3 games in 2011, he's never missed a regular season or playoff game.
ChampSampson
Foster has the best feet out of any NFL RB.
kingsofromance
I actually just looked at career averages.... Foster's averages are insane. I knew how great he is but wow... Arian gets a TD every 23 RUSHING ATTEMPTS. Maybe I was wrong. Either way it looks as if they are splitting carries more than ever before moving forward. Kubiak is usually a pretty straight shooter. frenzal rhomb
I watched the game too. What concerns me is when Foster was in the game the D's were stacking the line and in the backfield by the time Foster got the ball. They laid back quite a bit more when Tate was in. Tate had the holes, Foster had to deal with quibit of penetration. Wow, that's worse than ward you were hard on the beaver last night
BA Baracus
People tend to forget that Tate was drafted to be the Houston RB1 and Foster left him in the dust. Agree. I seem to recall that early drafts (before tate got hurt) that season had tate going ahead of foster, with foster being the third texan rb off the board, behing slaton and tate. Tate got hurt during preseasin, slaton fumbled a lot, and foster had his breakout season. I remember taking crappy ass reggie bush instead of foster somewhere around the 9th round in my final 12 team draft that summer. Lame. MTSuper7
This isn't as far fetched a question as some might think. Coaches favor veterans, especially when those veterans have been studs. I'm not saying that Kubiak is the second coming of John Fox, but it wouldn't surprise me if Foster maintained the lead role for a while even if Tate delivers more YPC, shows more burst, or whatever.
nelsosi
The best way to tell who 'the guy' is in a backfield, is who is on the field in a close game in the 4th quarter. We saw it all last year when both Foster and Tate were healthy, and we saw it again on Monday. Tate needs more touches, but I see this levelling out around 65-35 split. With Foster seeing more touches in crunch times, and Tate seeing more touches in games that get out of hand.
