tony2345
What are your thoughts on the best way to break ties in the playoffs? In the past, we have had teams name 1-3 players in order that they want to use them for ties and the highest scoring of them wins the tiebreaker. Gopher
Do you utilize decimal scoring? If not, that's the best way. If you already have that in place, you could use bench points as the tie-breaker, although some leagues do the opposite (use manager efficiency rating, which is essentially points scored divided by possible points scored). Not sure which one makes more sense, frankly, but those are a couple of options.

I personally don't care for using bench points or efficiency rating, as those are things that could be manipulated (though, to do so just for the advantage if a game were to tie seems silly, stranger things happen). Other methods I have seen, in no particular order: Pick a bench player (or 3) and break the tie that way. Use total TDs scored by starters as the tiebreaker Eliminate the kicker score and break tie, If still tied, eliminate team D score. If still tied, eliminate x position, and so on through the lineup. Give the higher seed team "homefield advantage", and the automatically advance as a tiebreaker. This method at least rewards a better regular season performance Flip a coin.

Yeah, I don't particularly care for the ones I mentioned either. They just happened to be the first ones that came to mind. I like the last one you listed (before the coin flip)... Make the lower seed actually beat the higher seed.
stevegrab
We don't have a tie breaker, basically just use a coin flip. We also allow the owners to make their own agreement, from our by laws If a tie occurs during the playoffs, the 2 teams involved can either come up with an agreement as to which team moves on or they will consent to a coin-flip. We do not do decimal scoring and I do not recall a tie in almost 20 years. PS I do like the lower seed idea and may toss that out to our league. I've always thought there should be some advantage for having the higher seed, that would be a very small one.

tony2345
2 seasons ago i told everyone to name one player from their bench to use a tiebreaker. Well one person did not naem one, and there was a tie, in the championship game!!!!!!! ended up giving the win to the team that named one. nelsosi
Decimal scoring. After that I'd go highest seed.
BA Baracus
decimal scoring I have only seen one tie with decimal scoring. Opening week last season me and another guy tied in a PPR league. Damnedest thing ever
babe3927
I tied this week in the first round of the playoffs. Highest scoring kicker decided game. Luckily my kicker scored more then his so I move on. But I do like the idea of higher seed moving on. I'll bring that up next year before the draft. lzrdkng14
So we are in year 2 of our league and to make it simple we used bench points as a tiebreaker for playoff games last year. We had no ties... So this year, before the playoffs started, I put it out to the other playoff teams to see if we wanted to switch it up and they said to just leave it be. Well, sure enough we had a tie and it went to bench points. One guy (my brother) has RG3 and was pissed about losing that way (mostly at Shanahan). And, we also lock rosters after week 14 when the playoffs start. To make it even crazier, he had to make up 18 points on Monday night, with Tucker going up against Akers. And he actually tied it up on that 61 yd FG...insane. So, I think the bench points thing is weak, since there really is no skill involved. What I was going to propose was to pick a total of 3 players from your bench and you cannot have more than one at any position. Total points of those 3 is the tie breaker. If you are still tied, home team (higher seed) gets the win. Edited December 18, 2013 by lzrdkng14
