DMD
Seems like changing just to change. I actually like getting rid of XP more than this. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000330385/article/competition-committee-discussing-43yard-extra-point Competition committee discussing 43-yard extra point By Dan Hanzus The extra point has become the NFL's great afterthought. Could a substantial change be on the horizon? NFL Media's Judy Battista reports the NFL Competition Committee is in preliminary talks about placing the ball at the 25-yard line for the point-after attempt. That would make the extra point a 43-yard attempt. The ball is currently spotted at the 2-yard line, a 20-yard chip shot that was converted 99.6 percent of the time during the 2013 season. The kick was so automatic that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell floated the idea in January of eliminating the PAT entirely. "There is no consensus yet," one member of the committee told Battista. "We could experiment in preseason, but we are not there yet." Placing the ball at the 25-yard line would certainly increase the degree of difficulty for kickers. The conversion rate of field goals between 40 and 49 yards last season was 83 percent. Those odds are still favorable, but it adds another layer of strategy for coaches who also have the option to attempt a two-point conversion. Teams that "go for two" are typically successful about 50 percent of the time. Change is probably overdue. Kickers have never been better at their jobs than they are right now. These are skilled specialists who have outgrown the model. The game must evolve with the players.

boltnlava
I'm KINDA on the like side as well. The xpt has always been the most boring side of football. This may add at least a little mystery.
stevegrab
Stupid idea, so now a 2pt conv is that much harder (need a 25 yard gain to score vs. 2 yards) and the XP isn't all that harder (from 99.6% at 2 yard line to about 90% from 25). I am assuming the 90% for FG of 42 yards, they only say "conversion rate from 40-49 yards was 83%" and I assume it would be much higher from 42. Given the option between this and just getting rid of the extra point I'd almost go with get rid of it. Still not quite sure why they feel the need to change. I mentioned this elsewhere, its starting to seem like the NFL is talking about stupid rule changes every year just to keep people talking about the NFL. Even casual fans who ignore the combine and draft, would hear this story and discuss it with others. Personally I still feel the current system is fine. Or if you really want to move back the line where XP are kicked, fine do that but let teams go for 2 from the current 2 yard line. They could still go for 2 from the 25 on a botched play. The only negative there is making the surprise 2pt conversion hard (either no surprise or you line up at 25 to kick and do it, so harder to gain the additional yards). The one thing I really do not like is this, so kicking the XP is harder, and if you miss one (say score is 14-0 and you just scored a TD) now you're down by 8, with the 2PT conversion much harder. So a missed XP (much more frequent now from 42 yards than before from 19) is going to mean many more games decided by a missed XP. Is that really an improvement for the NFL? Or just a move towards getting rid of it completely?

stevegrab
Wait..what? I thought the 2 pter was still from the 2? I may have misintrepeted that from a post on another forum. I've re-read the full story from NFL.com (link below the text in DMD's post) and cannot see anything definitive about 2pt conversion distance. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000330385/article/competition-committee-discussing-42yard-extra-point Only this "Those odds are still favorable, but it adds another layer of strategy for coaches who also have the option to attempt a two-point conversion. NAUgrad
I still don't see why there needs to be a change at all. So what if 99.6 percent are converted. It's rare, but a missed extra point can change a teams entire scoring strategy. I know it's pretty much a gimmie, but every once in a while someone does miss. Just seems like change just because to me. Leave as is I say.

MustOfBeenDrunk
Vikings kicker on why PATs must stay, and how to improve them http://msn.foxsports...42-yards-030414 I say keep the PAT but limit the try to your starting QB only , dump the PK's If this works , then next we can get rid of Def players and all players must play both sides of the ball When we play in the park that's how we do it

Papajohn
After giving it a little bit of thought I actually like the idea of a long XP as it would actually mean something. I am not a huge fan of change when it comes to the NFL (or in general) but I would be okay with any change considering the XP as it is completely boring the way it is now.

We could blind fold the kicker On a serious note , I'm with you ( or used to be ) I hated when boxing added the Cruiser Weight class but now think their should also be a Super Heavy class ,, I also hated it when they went from 15 to 12 round championship fights ( still don't like that one much ) but after awhile you just get used to it. Now in the boxing examples I just gave it was for Fighters safety , here what what I hope it will do if they eliminate the XP completely is speed the game up , heck it could shave 10 min. of playing time off of each game. The problem I see is if they could shave 10 minutes they would just fill that with more advertizing time , like a commercial after every TD is made. I don't think they would make this move to create a more fan friendly game but instead to create more revenue ?

I look forward to sunday all week in football season and usually get together with friends and drink and have fun. I don't care if the games take 4 hrs.. For instance...if ads in a 3 hour game take up 30 minutes, the game being shown takes up 2.5 hours. Speed up the game to 2 hours of televised game time, guess how long the game will still take? Still 3 hours, since they now have an hour of ads to produce revenue.

If so just record the games and watch them at a quicker pace (skip commericals and such). I know I'm in the minority, but I love watching sports this way. I can knock out an NFL game in 1.5-2 hours without skipping much other than commericals and half time. I know I'm in the minorty, most just won't watch sports other than completely live for a multitude of reasons.

ts
Solution (as if one was needed, since this is proposed change just for the sake of change and/or the NFL admen wanting the NFL being a general water-cooler at work discussion topic during the off season) seems pretty easy to me ... teams have 3 options for handling XPs after a TD is scored: - The player that actually scores the TD (QB, WR, TE, RB, DB, LB, OL, DL, whomever) kicks the XP with the ball spotted at the 3 yard line, with a successful kick=1 point. - The designated specialist PK (as defined by the team prior to each game) kicks the XP with the ball spotted at the 40 yard line (or 35, or 30, whatever) with a successful kick=1 point. - The scoring team lines up from the 3 yard line and runs a non-PK formation "real" play, similar to the current 2-point conversion rule, with a successful play=2 points. Or, better yet, just leave it alone. Gawd, stop farking w/stuff that does not need farking with. Edited March 8, 2014 by ts

I have to shut my phone off though or my buddies will text me and give away whats going on. Drives them crazy, but I get to spend more time with my family and can sit down and watch all the action after they go to bed etc.
Gopher
I don't watch anything live anymore. Can't stand all of the commercials, and there just isn't enough time in the day, frankly. I'll even record two games (starting at the same time), and go back and forth (watch about 10 minutes of each at a time). Works pretty well, actually, except when the live updates on one game shows something that I haven't seen yet on the other. If I come across something that I want to watch live, I'll tape it, and find something else to do/watch for a few minutes, so that I can manage to watch it with a slight delay (and skip the ads). All in all, it works great (and I can watch games in nearly half the time). The main downside is that I've gotten so used to this method of watching sports/TV that watching something live (at someone else's house, etc.) is almost unbearable. I find myself wanting to grab the remote and hit the FF 30 seconds button, even when I'm watching a game at a bar.
