irish
Steve Smith's jersey has been removed from the Panthers online team store. Speculate what you will... Read on Twitter and bleacher report.

irish
Look out, he's gonna put a cap in somebody's arse for this First thing I thought. I wouldn't want to be the guy to have to tell him about his jerseys or that he's being cut if that's the case.

irish
Steve Smith (Car) jerseys at NFL.com http://www.nflshop.com/Steve_Smith_Carolina_Panthers_Jerseys That's NFL.com not the official Carolina Panthers website where I haven't seen any available - http://shop.panthers.com/carolina-panthers-jerseys.aspx?page=
flemingd
A team spokesman told ESPN.com that Smith's status with the team has not changed. The spokesman also said reports that the removal of Smith's No. 89 jersey from the team store and official website had to do with Smith's plans to add "Sr.'' to his jersey in recognition of the impending arrival of his namesake, not his impending departure from the team. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10585549/carolina-panthers-gauge-trade-interest-steve-smith
Zooty
per Rotoworld NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Panthers are "attempting to trade" Steve Smith. In other words, Smith will likely be cut if a trade partner can't be found. Considering that Smith turns 35 in May and is due $7 million in 2014, the Panthers aren't going to find a taker. In theory, it's surprising that it would come to this with one of the greatest players in Panthers history, but Smith appeared to have lost multiple steps last season. Excusing his rookie year and injury-ruined 2004, Smith's 745 yards were the second fewest of his career. With or without Smith, the Panthers have a desperate need at wideout. Tripleshot
He's gone at that salary. It wouldn't even matter except he's such a longtime Panther, with such diminishing production. It's not like he's a pillar of the community. Perhaps he gets cut and resigns or (much) less to stay a Panther, IF his ego allows.

The guy is great on interviews and really has some fire on the field. I would love to see him get cut and watch Denver grab him at a significantly reduced salary. He'll play like a man possessed next year.
electricrelish
Steve Smith will get $3 million if he is cut. Seems like a bad idea to cut him.
flemingd
He'd be a nice snag for any contender. San Diego also has the best need/fit/opportunity I think, and since CAR is so gracious as to pay Smith $3M regardless, maybe he takes a minimum deal to go catch all of Sproles' and Moore's targets that have to go somewhere. Really any true contender should look at him, GB, SF, Indy, DEN, SEA, NE can all justify bringing in a guy like him. Maybe his 1300 yard seasons are over, but he can still get open and he'd be a faster Boldin and bring some fire and leadership to a team. Strange, you mentioned all the contenders and left Dallas out.
