IrishPride
NFL COACHING CAREER Regular season 82-61 (.573) Postseason 6-4 (.600) Super Bowl wins 1 With stops at Jets,Pats and Hawks(HC)........Does Seattle make him a legitimate NFL head coach? His college career is tainted by NCAA violations but is it the team or the coach?
Finn5033
I think he has already proven he is a legit NFL coach, not sure why you would even question it. Edited January 16, 2015 by Finn5033
IrishPride
1st chance,His combined NFL record as a head coach was 33–31 (Before Seattle), and he was later considered a much better fit for college football than the NFL after his success at USC (Wiki Quote). Post USC (67-7), 2nd chance, Seattle 50-30 ? Is it the Team? What i'm saying is some teams are so talented they win in spite of coaching? His Jets/Pats tenure aren't exactly HOF #'s? Seattle seems to have rescued his career as a head coach in NFL? But it seems more team than coach?
Finn5033
I think the energy and system Carrol brought to Seattle has just as much to do with their success as the talent does. I am not a Seattle fan but IMO I don't see how you can not view him as one of the Elite coaches in the league
IrishPride
I'm a diehard Giants fan based on statstics and SB wins Coughlin is 96-80 (NYG) and theres no way he's elite? But his total #'s probably put him in hall? 164-140 reg season and 20-10 post season? 2 SB wins? Its like the Dilfer Effect but as it relates to coaching, remember he game managed his way to a SB victory. Coaches can perform in similiar circumsances, not elite but average or just above? So the team is what makes the difference? IMO
Seahawks21
Considering he has final say on personnel decisions, don't you give him some credit for acquiring and cultivating the talent to fit his system? Don't forget that he also took a bunch of late round picks and cast-offs (Chancellor, Sherman, Browner, Maxwell, Wilson, Lynch, Baldwin, Clemons, Bryant) and put them in perfect role to succeed. When he took over, this was one of the very worst rosters in the NFL. He built the best defense in the past decade with only two first-rounders (Thomas, Irvin). The guy can flat-out coach. stevegrab
He wouldn't be the first NFL HC to have success at his 2nd/3rd stop after doing something in between. Belchick wasn't very good with the Browns, went back to DC alongside Parcells a few more years (NE/NYJ), then voila he's a genuis with the Pats (and Brady) winning 3 SB in 4 years. I think Carroll can be successful in college or pros, it is him and not some system or other factor that made the Seahawks this good (especially given his role in personnel [thanks seahawks21].) Dolphin_Akie
Another case of disliking the guy but admiring his coaching ability, the Belichick category.

Bobby Brown
But it seems more team than coach? Considering he has final say on personnel decisions, This. He handpicked the GM, staff, and players (players in collaboration with the GM). IrishPride; seems like you are trying to penalize him for that. FWIW, I always though getting grown men who are millionaires to buy into a system is way under-rated vs. X's and O's. ETA...just saw the Uncle Post above (but John Schneider is the GM). Tripleshot
The Patriots didn't buy into his system back then. Still, his record was over .500 there and then Belichick comes in and wins quickly. Safe to say Belichick didn't build the roster all in his first year. USC was penalized for violations while Carroll was there. There's not one clean uber successful college program in existence. Believing otherwise is asinine. Was it Carroll, his assistants, or boosters? Who knows? I doubt it was at Carroll's idea, but he was probably blissfully ignorant. I don't blame him for leaving for the NFL with USC facing years of sanctions when Paul Allen was offering big bucks for a redemption shot at the NFL. As for is it the team or is it the coach? It's the coach. He had nothing in Seattle when he took over. The haters keep trying so damn hard to discredit the guy but the bottom line is, he's won an NCAA title and a Super Bowl title. Something he is doing is working.
