Housework...how does it work in your house?

A study done at the University of Michigan shows that having a husband creates an extra seven hours a week of housework for women and that a wife saves men from about an hour of housework a week.

There's no doubt that getting married and especially having children, creates more housework. However, I was curious to hear from fellow Huddlers, how does it work for you? Who does more of the housework? Are there defined jobs/roles? Who does the majority of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc? Who does the majority of the outdoor work; mowing, raking, weeding, gardening, trimming, etc? Caring for the children? Are things divided up evenly? Is there are pegboard with defined roles?

The kitchen and yard are both my domain; they are not to be messed with...the rest of the house is hers, I assist with some things here and there, but generally she "enjoys" keeping a clean house. And the baby, well that's an all-hands-on-deck situation

LMAO! First visual I had was you in an apron, spatula in hand, wife in an apron toilet bowl brush in hand and both of you running around the house trying to manage a single hell-raising child as they destroy your place. You can't stop 'em, you can only hope to contain 'em!

Single so I do it all. But then I don't have all the women's frilly stuff to keep extra clean either. What the hell is as duvey? And do you really need 40 pillows on the bed, and to make it every day.

Most guys I know cook some, and do most of the yard and mechanical work. Their wifes do most of the cleaning, laundry, etc. And the kids are usually a split, but in some cases the dads are old school and less involved like most men were when I was a kid.

The wife's baby shower was themed Alice In Wonderland and the girls got her this apron thing to go over her dress to look the part of Alice...well, it looks very similar to your typical french maid outfit and, yeah, big fan of its continued use

I keep vacillating from being excited for the kid to be mobile and scared sh*tless over such a task

Duvet is french for 'expensive comforter...and those decorative pillows are there so your room looks adult and presentable; don't ask why people are getting tours of your bedroom, "that's a stupid question and you have no sense of style or fashion", or something to that effect

We both have full time jobs, but my wife takes care of a lot more of the kids needs than I am able to, so I don't expect her to be "the homemaker." My wife almost exclusively does the cooking and I exclusively take care of the yard & all the handiwork that needs to be done. Everything else we almost equally share.

This is my situation, exactly. However, my wife is staying home with our 9 month old, so she does more with him. However when I'm home, we split things evenly.

Adult and presentable, can kind of relate, I'm 50 and my place usually doesn't look that now than it did in my 20s (less pizza boxes and more raisin bran).

The wife feeds all of us, she is pretty damn skilled in the kitchen too. I do the dishes, which is mostly just keeping the dishwasher managed.

She does most of the cleaning in the house and i do everything outside.

I do all the fixing/unclogging/upkeep type stuff. She does the grocery shopping.

We split the kid duties pretty even.

Pretty evenly split. Whoever cooks gets to relax after dinner while the other one cleans up. Most housework is hers, though I'm fine doing laundry if it gets me 3 games without complaint on Sunday. Grocery shopping usually shared. I get to do the bills.

For outside, I'm lucky that she likes to help out. She does a lot of the weeding, and she's great with the leaf blower. Lawn, chainsaw, firewood, and snowblower/shoveling is mine.

Works similarly to what B.A. said above. She cooks 75% of the time. I cook more in the summer (grilling). Dishes, I do more often as I work from home most days and can unload/load and do some other minor stuff. I do my own laundry, she does hers and we work with the kids to do their own. I'm all about the yardwork in the summer, and in fact she pushes me to make our son do more, but I'm too damn particular about it (and enjoy cranking tunes while I push the mower around). I mostly feed/water the dogs and cat. I do all home repairs and installations (e.g. ceiling fans, fixtures), call in a pro only as a last resort.

I don't function well trying to do household chores at the same time as my wife. There's something very off-putting about that dynamic. Maybe that's why men tend to gravitate towards the garage, and outdoor chores... just to get away from the all-seeing eye of Sauron making sure you do things "her" way. So basically I wait until my wife is not around and then I kick ass at whatever it is that needs to be done. Of course half the time she doesn't notice any of this, and then accuses me of never doing anything to help around the house. SMH.

I make breakfast - I cook kids dinners most nights. Wife cooks dinner for us most nights and I am sous chef.

Cleaning - kids do their part but wife and I split most else though I do most laundry and she does more general clean up.

We have a house cleaner come once a week to ensure we don't descend into filth

Getting a maid/house cleaner is the best decision my wife and I have made, especially because we have a pretty large house.

How much do you each pay for the housecleaner? For Irish... is it every week or every two weeks?

I pay a little over $200 and the ladies that come in for us do so every 3 weeks or so.
