stevegrab
Is it possible some of these guys are just tired of the NFL and don't like the direction things have gone the last few years? I've heard some fans (including a few here) talk about being turned off by the NFL lately.
keggerz
Turf toe is a much worse injury than people realize.
Sunday Couch Potatoe
Probably a combination of York/Balke idiocy and major injury. Don't blame him I'd run from that mess too. Hope he un retires in a year so we can still watch him play somewhere cause he was fun to watch work.

Would be much tougher as a player. It has to be health related. Edited March 9, 2015 by CaptainHook

No doubt easier for fans to give up, but if you played for 5-10 years and were paid well and saved some of it, then stepping away from the idiocy could be an option. I'm not saying the injury isn't a factor, but you have to admit this retirement seems out of the blue, and on the tails of some strange moves by SF. MorningMud
I watched his press conference about retiring. I knew he was a GREAT player, but I came away very impressed with him as a man. Whatever made him retire, I hope he rubbed off on some of the young guys out there in SF. They need it.
DMD
I agree - I watched his press conference and was really impressed with him as well. And he said it was his feet that forced him out of the league. That and wanted to play with his kids without the often crippling effects of playing too long. He also seemed extremely at peace with himself during the conference , still after a year off maybe we will see him back ?

theirish
Borland was the one reason Willis retiring didn't sting as much. Kid was a stud in the making. I appreciate why he's doing it, but it still hurts. Tripleshot
Holy crap. That team is just snakebitten. Borland was going to be a very good player, too.
Dolphin_Akie
Stunned by Borland retiring after just one season, can see why but was very surprised.
