One of the players Renck and Paige discussed was former Broncos’ starting running back Montee Ball. Ball had a disappointing 2014 season in which he was supposed to run away with the starting job. While Ball’s downfall can be linked to his appendectomy before the season, this season he finds himself behind Denver’s breakout star from 2014 C.J. Anderson.

While Ball remains optimistic that he’ll find a way to regain his position as Denver’s featured back, Renck says his time has come and gone.

“If C.J Anderson stays healthy, his commitment is at a new level,” Renck said. “I don’t see Ball getting the chance to prove that anymore. I think the window closed on him last year.” “It’s a bellcow offense, the back doesn’t rotate in and out.”

After being burnt by the Montee Ball train last year, Im always sceptical but at least he has a solid body of work from last year to justify him being given the first shot. Just concerns he might lose carries to any of the three RBs behind him.

IMO, a prototypical high risk, high reward pick.

His 9Anderson's) body of work was fairly impressive last year, but came in a limited number of games - 7 as the feature guy.

In those 7 games, he went over 100 yards twice (against MIA and KC)and scored in 5 of the games (1 game was a receiving TD, two of those games were 3 TD games).

My fear with him is that with time for opposing teams to study film and game plan for him, he won't find as much success over the course of a full season, and with Manning a year older and with likely lesser weapons at his disposal, there can be a bit more focus by defenses on the passing game.

I personally see his as overvalued as a early/mid first round pick which is where I have seen him going a lot, but there is certainly the potential to perform at that level, just not a very long track record to support that.

Happy to have him as my RB2, not so much as my RB1. I own him in a couple of keeper/dynasty leagues where he's just that... A RB2/RB3 or flex play. I have a feeling I won't be rostering him in redraft leagues, however (he'll be gone by the end of the 1st round, and I won't touch him until the 2nd, most likely).

Exactly my thoughts!

The way I see it, CJ has as good a shot at being THE RB1 as anyone else. He doesnt have any serious competition for the job. Montee Ball sucks and Hillman is more of a specialist type. Kubiak wants to ride a workhorse and his running backs are always awesome. Running backs in Peyton Manning offenses are awesome. He can run between the tackles, has wiggle at the second level, and is an excellent reciever. It is a perfect storm really. I'd say that only Bell and Charles rival his upside. He is worth his current ADP.

I think you are forgetting about AP. He could very well "rival his upside". And while I like Anderson too, a new coach, a new system, a less then stellar offensive line, and a lack of top end speed all add up to too much risk for me to put him on my teams at his current price. If he was more of a second round guy/cheap grab in dynasty, I would do it in a heartbeat. Just don't like the price right now.

Montee Ball sucks

I feel like this is the wildcard here. Ball's rookie season was promising and then last year was a disaster - but mainly due to a terrible start after emergency surgery followed by an injury. If anyone could really surprise here, especially with Kubiak's track record, it would seem to be Ball. At least you know the price to take a flyer on Ball will be dirt cheap. A flyer on Hillman makes little sense to me.

I don't disagree with that. But it's not his upside/ceiling that I have hesitancy about, but rather his floor/downside. Of the top 10 or so RB's, he probably has a better shot of losing the job altogether than anyone else, as well. Drafting is about evaluating risk/reward, and the potential reward is certainly there with Anderson. But, so is the risk. And, I'm not sure I want that kind of risk with my #1 pick. In most cases, I want my top pick to be as sure of a thing as it possibly can be, and although I like what I'm hearing this off-season, he's still quite possibly the least "sure thing" of the bunch, for a variety of reasons.... Limited sample size, new coach/scheme, etc.

(Rotoworld) Peyton Manning went out of his way to talk up C.J. Anderson Wednesday. "C.J. of course, if you talk to him you think he's about a 12-year veteran starter and he's only started six games," Manning said. "I'm getting a ton of reps with him, and the sky is the limit for him, I will say that."

Could be "Peyton" speak...But if he likes him, I like him.

I'm starting to question my initial comment. After thinking about it, Peyton is good for RBs, Kubiak is good for RBs. If I can get a WR in the first round there may a case to grab CJ in the 2nd (if he's there)...though I may be eyeing Forsett a little more.

Also if you're concerned about Anderson losing his job to Ball, then pick up Ball too. In most mock drafts iv done he's still available in the 8-10 rounds.

I know I'm in the minority here and Ball screwed me across the board last year to boot......but...

I can easily see Anderson getting hurt week 4 and Ball coming in to shine....if he comes in after week 8 then he is easily a "match light" candidate...

I'm not sure why anyone ever got so high on Ball in the first place. His rookie season was ok, but he lost alot of snaps to Moreno and Hillman. Reasons being he wasn't as fast as Hillman and he couldn't do pass protection worth a damn whereas Moreno could. So when he took the starting job idk what people expected him to be, but every Denver fan knew.

I'm surprised to hear he went in the 1st and 2nd rounds for alot of people. If memory serves me correctly he went in the 5th in our draft last year.

Just got CJ in the 2nd round last night at pick 2.07 after taking Jamal Charles in the first at 1.06. I was thrilled with that start.

You have to love the opportunity, who cares about the RB's behind or limited body of work.. from week 12 vs Miami on he was incredible. I agree with some of the others, I would be a little nervous if he was my RB1 but as a RB2 man that could pay some big dividends.. there have been a lot of rushing td's in Denver over the last 3 years, I think ride the CJ wave until it crashes ashore.

At least it won't be a time share in Denver. This actually makes Montee Ball a little more enticing.

http://www.rotoworld...-bellcow-runner

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak made it clear Wednesday that he intends to use a "bellcow" back in his offense.

"I believe in the (bell cow)," said Kubiak. "... I think if a guy goes out there and he shows he can play three downs, can protect the quarterback, and can handle it, then he should stay out there." Steve Slaton, Arian Foster, and Justin Forsett can all attest to this. C.J. Anderson reported to Broncos camp at 218 pounds, down three from OTAs. He remains in line to operate as Denver's "bellcow" this year.

How does it make Ball more enticing? He says CJ remains in line to operate as the bellcow. Is it just a belief that doesn't work out, he gets injured?

That's what I don't understand. People keep referencing Ball as a reason not to draft CJ so high. Ball was ineffective to start the season out but wasn't it fully understood they faced a few stud defenses? And it wasn't his performance that opened the gates for CJ, it was his injury. So I do not understand how people compare the situations, that we should stay away from CJ because Ball got hurt last year after soaring up to the first round. The offensive line situation, however, is a different story.

Personally after careful thought I kept CJ over Matt Forte in my 2-keeper league and I have zero regrets.
