Are you happy with your keepers? Guys who whine for changes...

We must keep 4 players, and we can keep people we drafted for as long as we like. I'm happy with my keepers, though I wish I could have kept 5.

We have guys who drafted very poorly last season, claiming that they don't have 4 decent keepers and they want to change the rules to 3 keepers.

Case in point: Dez Bryant was available last season due to someone leaving the league.... one guy drafted Cordarelle Patterson when he could have drafted Bryant.... so now he's not happy about having to keep 4 players. And we have another guy who had taken a really bad pick, though at this moment it escapes me.

I find it annoying that people who make stupid mistakes in drafting think that long standing rules should be changed to adapt to their stupidity.

Good topic!

1st..Understand your frustration; and the rules are the rules...Always read carefully before joining any League. However, every long term League must make changes along the way, or even the strongest of Leagues will fade and die. Take a League vote; if it changes and you can't live with it, you can leave, or they can leave...Just the way of FF.

2nd...Offer solutions...I have seen a lot of keeper Leagues move to "contract" keepers. That way the talent pool is always changing, and lesser teams have hope for the future.

3rd...That's why I mostly play in Dynasty with contracts. You are rewarded for your hard work, but have to constantly plan ahead to remain balanced. You have to choose the years you want to make a Superbowl run, and those you need to rebuild. My fave for long term play.

Finally, if it's a group of friends...Does it really matter that much? I always have much more fun regardless of format, playing with a group of people I know.

Don't let it deter from the fun of the upcoming season. I'm sure you will get it worked out...Have a great Season!!

Let them keep up to 4. If they want to keep 0 and enter the draft early to rebuild, they should have the ability to do so. In leagues like yours, without length limits, the worst teams can be stuck in the bottom for a decade with no real hope of getting much better. I'll never play in any league like that ever again.

We play fantasy sports for fun. Leagues like yours aren't very fun for very many of the owners. There will be constant whining until you come up with realistic team rules that provide more fun for the owners.

I don't know if you guys get it.... these 2 folks voted for 4 keepers. Now that they were stupid, they want to change the rules. In fact, one of the guys was the one who proposed we go to 4 keepers from 2.

We should change the rules to accommodate stupid draft picking?

Seahawk... here is how we help the bad players.... we don't have a snake draft. Last place finisher drafts first every round.... the next to last place guy drafts 2nd every round...... and so on.

I believe this is the 29th or 30th year for this league, and it's always the same 2 guys who want to change things - usually so that they get a benefit.

No offense, but it sounds like your whining about whiners. Also, when you discuss your league setup you invite comments and opinions about it. Don't be surprised if they do not align with your views. Personally I think both the must keep and the 1-x draft for every round are bad setups and help promote the type of behavior your OP is about.

We have a similar keeper league, must keep 5 players (well you could keep less but you get no additional early draft picks to compensate). We have some teams with 6-7 players worth keeping (top 60 or so given 12 team league) and others with only 2-3. That usually makes for some nice trades, I have a guy I cannot keep better than your 4/5 keeper, so you give me a decent draft pick and he's yours. We don't usually see a 1st round or even 2nd (equivalent to 6/7 round in redraft), but 3/4 round picks are common.

I've tried to get the rules changed to allow some flexibility, maybe keep at least 3 or 4, and if don't keep the max 5 there are draft picks before the official first round to compensate. I'm sure it would reduce the trading, and for whatever reason (mostly resistance to change and fear theat new rules they don't propose screw them) our league never approves it.

I too would be annoyed with people trying to change the rules now, for this upcoming season. We never even try that, any rule change needs to be done well in advance so they don't impact choices people made the prior season. Scoring changes are done before a draft, but roster/keeper changes are generally made for the season after the one starting.

We also don't do a snake draft, last place drafts first every round, champ drafts last. Our league has been going over 20 years with few major changes (adding team defense, scoring for yardage, etc.)

PS For those who don't like this kind of league don't play in one. For those who think this kind of league can be no fun, and the people at the bottom can never rebuild, my league would disagree with that. In general all the owners have fun, and nobody is clamoring for rule changes. When they do want changes, we listen and discuss then take a vote. Teams at the bottom can and have rebuilded, some owners remain strong not on the back of a few key keepers but through good management in general, including trading away players past their prime.

I agree with offering a better solution. For example in one league I'm in you can keep 5 players, but they move up a draft position(snake draft) one space the 2nd year they are kept. In another league you can keep 4 and regardless of length kept they move up a slot in the snake draft. In both leagues you can only keep one player in the round 1 or 2 slot, not both. This way players slowly become too costly to keep and become available. As well a little smart drafting or free agency pickups can add great players to your roster. So maybe offer a different solution.

Any rule change needs to be for the better of the league and not be made with ulterior motives. I agree with Stevegrab that any rule changes should take effect in the future so that you don't necessarily know who may benefit or suffer by it. In my re-draft league we did the same with determining the draft order so people voted for what was best and not what benefited them that season.

Can you list the keepers of the best two teams?

And please list the keepers of the two whiners?

Thanks!

Well, one I know is Luck, Hilton, Green and Martin..... he doesn't want Martin. He is the guy who took Patterson over Dez.

I am one of the best 2 teams..... Julio, Calvin, Peterson, and Murray. ( though I may keep CJ Anderson instead of Murray )

The guy who won the league is keeping A. Brown, LeVEon, Lacy, and Travis Kelce ( Someone traded Lacy to him )

Yeah, if I'm him, I'm not playing in that league anymore, especially if you're going to make me keep guys rather than having the ability to drop all my players and draft the best rookies. What's the point?

That guy has zero chance to compete for several years. This is fantasy football. It is supposed to be fun. That guy has no chance to have any fun. He's going to go through several years of beating his head against a wall. IF he drafts really well, he still needs the other owners to make some poor decisions to have any chance, otherwise it could easily turn into a decade. A decade. That's a pretty big portion of your fantasy football life to waste playing in a league that you have no chance of competing in.

4-team league?

I knew it was going to be something like that. That's what happens in leagues like this. A good owner plus a little luck can make unbeatable rosters. I played in a league for a while where one guy led the league in points 8 years in a row with six titles. This is why leagues like this don't really exist anymore.

  • 4 weeks later...

I understand what you're saying about the same guys whining because they made bad decisions. But I also understand what they are saying. Being able to keep 4 guys for as long as you want is a bad set up for many reasons. Main reason is it can be really fun for a couple guys and completely suck for the rest of them. I would say if you want to stick with the 4 keepers make it so you can keep up to 4 guys but don't have to keep any.
