So this one guy in my league...

Wasn't there on draft night. the computer ended up autopicking.

He never bothers to tinker with lineup, even leaves in players on byes/injuries.

Hasnt started a kicker for a few weeks now... He played a suspended Gates for weeks 1-4

So here's some of his team:

AP

Freeman

Forsett

Eli

Gates

Steve Smith

Hurns

He's somehow 3-2 with Smith playing while he was out. Gates playing all weeks.

Please allow me a second to go smash my head against the wall.

There is absolutely the luck factor.

Sitting in the 4th round, I needed to grab a receiver because they were suddenly going fast. Just in front of me were Matthews, Cooks and Keenan Allen. They picked Cooks & Matthews and I had to "settle" for Allen. He was coming from an off year, so I was nervous about the pick. Now I look like a genius lol, but it's all dumb luck. Those other 2 have flopped bad comparable to projections.

On a side note based on your post, one guy in our league was having horrible connection issues and his team drafted Jordy Nelson when he lagged out. Nelson was injured the previous night. It doesn't always go roses and unicorns lol..

In my primary league, which is a 10-team, 2 keeper league (i.e., 20 keepers total), I took Keenan Allen with my 2nd pick (the equivalent of the 4th round), and our commissioner who was keeping the draft board (we do it old school, no tech), snickered and made a snide comment when I took him that early (thanks to The Huddle's pre-draft rankings!)...Allen is currently the 4th highest WR in our scoring system (behind only Julio, Fitz, and Hopkins)...who's laughing now?

yeah, in our league it's a $5 fine each week you do not submit a starting lineup (i.e. use last week's as default), and if you start a bye week player...there have been a few problems during the season, but that owner is typically not invited back...

Having trouble understanding that, how is last week's lineup not qualify as a starting line-up. Must be something about how your league site runs, maybe it was MFL where people told me they must go in and enter a roster each week. CBS carries my line-up from one week into the next, and I only make changes if necessary. If it didn't the first thing I would do Tuesday morning is enter my line-up (I usually make prelimary moves that day to replace byes or sending a sucky Peyton Manning to my bench).

We've never had much trouble with owners not being active enough to cover byes or inactve players. We have had it happen a few times, and I understand from talking to other owners that some take it more seriously than others, and some (like me without a family) have more time than others. We've got one owner who will only make a few roster moves each year, since they cost $2 each and he doesn't want to spend even more money. Noticed this week one owner had 3 defenses, when I talked to him he explained he didn't sub in the Jets D before the game started, and his other D Pats were on a bye. He didn't want to drop Pats D and couldn't drop the other, so he added a third and hasn't made a roster move since then (which is when he plans to drop a D). It stood out because few owners even carry 2 D.

yes, It is MFL and you do have to submit weekly lineups, or your lineup from the previous week will default (I'm not sure if that's a system or commissioner setting)...I'm not a huge fan of MFL, but for whatever reason our commissioner insists on using it...

That's the part I'm not getting, if the site defaults to last week, then how is doing that not submitting a lineup? The way I read your post is that if an owner tries to use last weeks lineup as a default they are fined $5 for not submitting a lineup. Sounds like you're allowed to use last week, but you're fined for not manually going in and entering the same list of players.

Not important, just my OCD mind trying to understand something.

no, you understand - it's just our commish demanding that everyone pays attention and "manually" submits a lineup each week...you can absolutely use the same lineup you started the prior week (as long as there are no bye or injured players), but you have to actually go into the system and submit something for the current week...i know, it sounds crazy, but it does keep owners active for fear that they'll be fined...it's never been a problem for me, as I typically visit the site at least 50 times/week, but for others I guess it's a struggle...LOL

I'll be ecstatic if my week 6 opponent plays his bye week kicker. More opponents = more prize money. More absent minded opponents = more prize money for ME.

yeah, but would you feel the same way if you were fighting for the final playoff spot, and the other guy's opponent did the same thing? ;)

Exactly. We have 1/2 guys in our league always seem to catch the breaks with schedules etc, I just know they'd be the team benefiting from an absent owner having half his team on bye when they play him.

there's two guys like this in my league - one who just doesn't really care and drops good players if they had a bad week or have a minor-moderate injury and picks up guys who are not even gonna see the field, and then he still leaves players in during their bye weeks and doesn't start some players that are clearly better. it's weird. i think it's cause he doesn't like losing so he just doesn't try to save face.

then there's another guy who has a great team (well, until charles got hurt). and he'll pick up good players but then not even play them. during gronk's bye week he picked up a solid TE and then didn't bother making him a starter. i think charles is still sitting there at RB1... and this guy's 3-2 :/

In my league we just wouldn't invite them back next year. I think you just have to see the team as a bye week for the whole league, that way it's fair for everyone.

If you replace the owner with a competent owner then the teams that played him earlier when he was incompetent have the advantage. There is no right way to do it.

Thanks for explaining that, I like the idea of keeping owners involved. I can let my line-up ride, score points and win my game, but I pay a fine for it.

That only works if every team plays every other team the same number of times, not sure how many leagues are setup that way. In our league (3 divisions of 4 teams) there is one team you don't play, and the 3 others in your division you play twice. So that won't be the same number of easy wins for every other owner. And specifically those in the division with that team get the advantage of playing them twice, and one less team to battle with in their division. Imagine 1 division with 2 teams who aren't trying, huge advantage for the other 2.

I'm glad we don't have people that do this regularly. If we did me and my co-commish would talk to them, and strongly encourage them to be more active. If that didn't work we'd probably go with the "don't invite them back" though we've never taken that kind of action for any reason (and have had less than 10 new owners over our 20+ year history).

A lot of similar gripes here. A lot of these matchup/starting lineup issues are kind of just inherent with the head-to-head system most people use. (because lets be real, it's more fun than total points leagues). You can get really unlucky and score the most total points in a league and completely miss the playoffs if every week your opponent goes off on you, I've seen it happen more than one season. Or you can get lucky and play cupcake matches because of guys not submitting lineups.

My solution: Split the pot between the person who wins the championship and the person with the most total points. 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, whatever. And if the championship winner is also the top total points....winner takes all.
