Cowboys backfield shake up. Info on depth chart

As you already know, the Cmike experiment is over. For those of you wanting to know about the remaining backs here is some info I posted in the "other thread" that many probably avoid so I'll repost it here. If you read my post in preseason McFadden was my prediction to own the backfield and he now does.

If you own DMC pick up Rod or Trey. Depending on which you prefer to own. For PPR you want Trey (Dunbar role) but Rod will be the every down back type should DMC go down.

Rod Smith, 6' 3" 223lb bruiser. Looking very good both running and catching out of the backfield. Working on his blocking assignments but has been picking it up nicely. It was Smith's progress and Cmike's lack there of coupled with his locker room antics that got Cmike released. The guy just didn't know when to quit playing around amidst a 7 game losing streak. Rod Smith is a power runner in the mold of Beast Mode. Has good latteral movement and will hit the hole with power. North south kind of kid.

The other back is Trey Williams a 5' 7" 180lb scat back in the mold of Dunbar. He too has shown nice hands and elusiveness in practice. Has good awareness and runs good routes for a RB. He is trying to get up to speed on the route tree but also is a willing blocker. Showed nice ability to be scrappy taking on Gackar (Cowboys back up linebacker) who was stood up in practice on an A gap blitz last week by the little guy.

Gus Johnson was released so these are the only two left on the roster. You can expect both to see the field in different roles. If I had to guess I would say Trey sees more of the field so long as Mcfadden is healthy. Rod Smith will come in to relieve him but Trey is being groomed to have a role as Dunbar did.

Thanks for this. If McFadden stays healthy, do you see either of these guys getting many touches? Sounds like maybe Smith on 3rd down and goal line. Seems like Williams would be more random change of pace at that size.

From what I gather, the Cowboys coaches are all in on McFadden caring the load. Trey is the most likely to see the field as a receiver in 5 wides and out of the backfield swing passes like Dunbar. Rod Smith has progressed to the point that they have confidence in him caring the load if anything happens to McFadden. So much so they let Micheal go. In fact, Smith has done a really good job with blocking and I could see him in on passing downs for protection purposes with the ability to carry the ball if Romo checks to a run.

The bottom line was they trusted Smith more than they did Micheal in pass protection which is saying a lot because they aren't about to take any chances losing Romo again. For a rookie to be the only backup to protect Romo should anything happen to Mcfadden he had to really be convincing in practice proving he knew what he was doing. I wouldn't depend on Smith for goal line duty though only as backup. Like I said, earlier, if I had to guess, Trey would be more valuable if Mcfadden is healthy in PPR leagues with Smith being the handcuff.

In dynasty leagues I would pick up Rod Smith. There is a roster spot available though so I wouldn't be surprised if they fill it with another RB from somewhere.

Yeah...where were you? Thought you'd be all over that?

Nope, that bait was stinky. ;) My comment was between me and DMD or the thread sheriff of the house. I'm sure he walked into the saloon seeing what you and me were up to.

I was just part of the welcoming committee. Just busting your balls to see if you had any. You passed. Welcome to the huddle BNS.

The board is a shell of its former self but still provides some of the best info on the web.

Gotcha. Misunderstood that one, obviously. Either way, I don't hold a grudge. Gotta say what I gotta say, and I know I'm not the only one.

All good......

Looks like your Lions are turning things around hopefully. Good thing cause I'm depending on Megatron and Tate to make a playoff run in one of my money leagues. Road them to the top last year. So far they've been killin me. Hoping for the same turn around for my Cowboys. I'm all in with the running game and the passing game.

I am having a really hard time pinning my hopes to someone named Jim Bob Cooter. Seems like he should be in Nascar.
