Gourdeau Posted December 31, 2015 Share Posted December 31, 2015 One of my biggest best peeves is when a team with a high point total has 5 teams ahead of them with a lower points for but have very low points against. I'm looking to implement a wildcard team and the current suggestion is to have teams 1-5 ranked based on h2h records, and then team 6 is the highest scoring team remaining. We have 10 teams, top 2 records get a bye and next 4 playoff in week 14. Wondering how you guys who have a wildcard rank your seeds. I'm battling myself with a bunch of what ifs. Such as, what if the 9th seed is the next highest point total and has a 5-8 record and has 1100 points for and the 6th seed has a 7-6 record and has 1055 points, is 5 points really worth trumping that 6 seed? Do we do a play in style game between the highest scoring team remaining and the 6th seeded h2h record, if so how and when? Do you have an asterisks by the rule stating that the wildcard will only be implemented if there is a team that has a higher point total than one of the top 2 seeds etc.. Looking for any suggestions.Trying to rewards teams who have a hell of a year but seem to face the highest scoring team most weeks, trying to eliminate some bad luck. The RTS league that Muto almost took down (again) puts 4 teams into the playoff and the seeding goes: 1. Best Record 2. Most points (of remaining teams) 3. Best Record (of remaining teams) 4. Most points (of remaining teams) Maybe some sort of alternating thing like that is what you are looking for. I am always advocating for all-play win percentage as a better seeding method than total points. Total points tends to reward the boom or bust type teams a little more, where all-play rewards the consistently good teams a little more. In our rules it states "The last wildcard spot will go to the team with the highest overall points for, that is not already in the playoffs." Since they would have the worst record of the bunch anyway, they are the last seed. I was not following your 5 point difference example but it shouldn't matter. Personally, I'm a big fan of this since it helps the good team who always plays the high score. It doesn't happen every year but it sure seems like it does. All-play is your record vs every team in every week, as if you had played everyone. So in a 10 team league, if you have the 3rd highest score in a given week, your all-play record for that week would be 7-2 as you would have outscored 7 teams, and would have been outscored by 2 teams. You add these records up over the course of the season and get your season long all-play record. If a boom-bust type teams outscores everyone by 50 points in one week, he still gets a 9-0 all-play record that week. That is why it rewards the consistently good teams more. A team that is consistently top 4 in scoring week to week is going to end up with a better all-play record than a team that is 1st one week then 8th the next. Just want to be clearThat's not what I'm getting, it specifically said "The last wildcard spot will go to the team with the highest overall points for, that is not already in the playoffs." The last wildcard is highest remaining point total not in the playoffs based on record. I like this idea (or all play record) as a way to make sure those high scoring teams are not left out. We actually have a pot of money from roster moves that we pay out to the top 3 in points. Those teams are also usually in the playoffs, but not always. Just want to be clear no, you're making it too confusing. Its very simple. Put in the first 5 teams by record. From teams that are left (ie. not in playoffs), the one that scored the most points is the last seed. Do it this way and there are no "what ifs " to worry about.
