Wolverines Fan
Per rotoworld: http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/9268/lovie-smith Buccaneers fired head coach Lovie Smith. He went 8-24 in two years with Tampa. Early rumors have the Bucs staying in-house and potentially promoting OC Dirk Koetter to head coach. Smith's defense improved over the course of 2015, but his principles and defensive philosophy seem largely outdated at this stage. Smith's offenses have always been committed to the run -- arguably to a fault -- and that remained the case with the 2015 Bucs. If Koetter does replace Lovie, we wouldn't be surprised to see Jameis Winston turn it loose a bit more. Jan 6 - 10:35 PM I guess we'll find out the real reason they canned him sometime soon. BA Baracus
I always thought the Smith hire in Tampa was a poor one, but damn, if you're going to hire the guy, you should give him more than 2 seasons to do something.
Shorttynaz
Early rumors have the Bucs staying in-house and potentially promoting OC Dirk Koetter to head coach. Watched this guy coach at ASU - nothing special - a .500 coach. He liked to air it out when he was calling plays here - maybe he'll have better luck as the HC of a pro franchise. Eagles are rumored to be in on him too.. http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2016/1/6/10718102/philadelphia-eagles-coaching-candidate-profile-dirk-koetter-tampa-bay-buccaneers

Scorcher
It was a real surprise around here and the lead story on the local news. I don't get it. The first year he had no QB, and Martin was MIA. He got Martin going and his rookie QB had a good rookie season season. The fans here are hopeful and looking forward to next season.
stevegrab
Two years to turn a program around is ridiculous. Telll it to the Browns. In one way I'm not happy because its another coach opening we have to compete with. In another though it adds a decent HC option with experience to the list of possible candidates. I swear soon the NFL will see 1/3 of its coaches fired every year, it is absolutely crazy that these guys are given so little time.
sksmith
"...been committed to the run --- arguably to a fault --- and that remained the case with the 2015 Bucs" Maybe this is just a bitter D Martin owner opining, but I saw way too many games where they were moving the ball effectively and efficiently on the ground in the first half just to see the 2nd half be a near complete abandonment of the run and poor Winston flail about to another multi INT game and the offense as a whole go stagnant

jamesplante11
It looks like TB is not picking up DC Leslie Frazier's 2016 option either. Def.
I will find it comical if Koetter becomes the head coach of another team and leaves Tampa high and dry. Edited for manurety grammar. Edited January 7, 2016 by Def.

gilthorp
He is uninspiring as a coach - no emotion...flat as can be. This can be good for a perennial winner, but not in a rebuild. Not even sure he can be a good DC anymore as his base scheme is used up. He'll probably get one more chance in the next 3-5 years though. I see him fitting in Houston or Dallas in the near future. Stay classy Bucs organization. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/01/07/bucs-planned-to-meet-with-lovie-smith-on-thursday/ Curious if you actually read the article. I skimmed it but read about this yesterday, I read the GM or somebody called to tell him that the owner wanted to meet with him. Then the moron says "I don't think its good news..." So Lovie told him, just have the guy call me. They did and told him he was fired. Doesn't sound like the Bucs were being tools, just somebody slipped up, and Lovie didn't want the stress of the face-to-face meeting. But hey, some buy at PFT says the Bucs are scum so it must be true.

Sounds like he's not well suited to Cleveland, I'd prefer established with experience and some success to out of the box never been a HC (or for one candidate even more than a position coach) type.
