Broncos match offer for RFA C.J. Anderson

Broncos re-signed restricted free agent RB C.J. Anderson to a four-year, $18 million contract.

Cue the sad trombone for the Dolphins, who had supposedly structured Anderson's offer so the Broncos couldn't match it. With their quarterback situation remaining unsettled, the Broncos decided they couldn't lose a runner who was easily their best back last season, and one of their most important players down the stretch each of the past two years. Now the undisputed lead back for an offense that will likely be dramatically more run heavy in 2016, Anderson and his three-down skill-set should provide RB1 value in fantasy leagues.

I don't understand the logic behind what the Broncos did. They could have tendered him at the 2nd round level and had him for $2.5 million for one year and still been able to match any offer (which would have been a smaller contract)?

I agree. The only explanation I can think of (and there are still some holes in the theory) is that Elway thought Anderson's drop off in production/consistency since the end of 2014 would kill his market and that he could be brought back for less than the $2.5 million for 2016.

I think Elway gambled and lost in this one. But on the bright side IF Anderson does hit his stride this year, then Elway potentially saved himself a good amount of money down the road

To me, it appears the original RFA tender decision came, in part, because Elway underestimated the market for running backs, and maybe because they were looking at saving every dollar they could towards paying for a starting quarterback. Now, with Oz gone, and Sanchez in-house for $4.5m, more money suddenly became available. I look for the Broncos to draft a QB as a project, keep Sanchez (maybe as this year's starter), and keep Siemian on the roster as well....and/or let them battle it out.

In reality. Anderson will count for a 2016 cap number (approx $2.1m) that is actually less than what the second-round tender would have cost the Broncos, and a reasonable cap of $4.3M in 2017. This may, in hindsight, prove to be a really good deal (vs. a 1 year 2016 2nd round tender), especially if CJ tears it up this year, as now he's locked-in for 2 years, plus options for 2 more.

After taking the time to look up the contract and understand it, I agree. This looks to be a solid move. By letting the open market set CJ's salary, Elway doesn't have to worry that he overpaid and CJ isn't left wondering if he could have gotten a better deal. Lower 2016 cap number. CJ happy and locked up for 4 years at reasonable cost.

the other explanation is that Tannenbaum blew it with Miller so gave CJ an offer that no one would have expected. Denver gambled and lost. I wouldn't have matched that for CJ.

This seems pretty spot on, it really looks like due to the cap situation Elway gambled on Anderson and either won or lost depending on the numbers and your point of view. Won't really know till we see what he does in season IMO.
