raider4
My league has twelve teams with three divisions and four teams in each one. As commissioner, I typically assign teams to the divisions at random with an emphasis on mixing up the match ups as much as possible from year to year and trying to maintain balance and fairness. I am looking for some new and creative ideas on how to determine our division makeup.

irish
Have everyone complete an online dice roll and use the results to place teams in divisions. I do it every year. Edited May 15, 2016 by irish

raider4
Have everyone complete an online dice roll and use the results to place teams in divisions. I do it every year. Do consecutive numbers get put in the same division and do you use one die or two?
Dcat
We have 12 teams in a 14 week regular season followed by week 15 & 16 playoffs for the three division winners and one wild card (best record among the nine non-division winners). Each year, the 4 playoff teams from the previous year will be in one division, the middle 4 teams will be in another and the 4 teams with the worst records from the previous year will be in the third division. Each team plays its division cohorts twice (6 games) and each of the other divisions' teams once (8 games). This guarantees that there will be at least two new teams in our playoffs each year (the winners of the middle and third divisions) and at least one repeat team in the playoffs (the winner from the 1st division). The wild card can come from any of the divisions. We've been doing it this way for 14 years and everyone is quite happy. Sounds great and thanks!
irish
Do consecutive numbers get put in the same division and do you use one die or two? Yup, you basically do highest roll in the top listed division, down to lowest roll in the last spot in the last division listed. You can roll as many or as few dice as you like. We roll 3 dice. The total designates the order of draft selection choice, highest roll gets first choice and so on. First number of the 3 die is tie-breaker for the total/draft choice. The 2nd number is for division placement and the third is tie-breaker for division placement.
MorningMud
I think you leave divisions alone to allow for year over year rivals. But I'm boring sometimes!
