How to trust an online league of strangers?

I'd love to be a part of one of these online stranger leagues since I don't have enough friends who are into fantasy, but can anyone explain to me how you prevent getting burned in one of these leagues?

It seems like there is nothing you can do to protect yourself in these cases.

I have never been part of one of these leagues. I know there are sites like LeagueSafe and other sites that collect payments for the league and make payments when the season comes to an end. I have never used either of those sites, so maybe someone else will be able to give you more insight on them.

Other than that, I guess you have to go in blindly and trust that they will make the appropriate payouts once the season ends.

Look to join leagues with established Huddler's running them. Otherwise look for LeagueSafe leagues and closely review the payout options before joining (cause there are a couple different types if I remember correctly).

Fixed your sentence, but yes, what Def said.

This all makes sense and I looked into Leaguesafe. But with Leaguesafe, couldn't someone stack a league with a bunch of their friends (or fake accounts ) and then just have all of them vote to not pay the winnings?

Anyway, I like the idea of using an established league. I'll try to maybe get in touch with Irish.

You really just have to go with your gut and join one you have faith in that the people will be honest.

That's definitely possible, but a lot of work on their part to make a little bit of money. There are also some sites out there you can sign up for as an individual and join with other random teams that the site manages. These are less risky as long as the site is reputable. Or honestly just find a league that has been around for multiple years and have an active message board. Also some leagues everyone gives out their phone numbers as texting trade deals to negotiate is often easier than emailing.

It can be quite easy to identify a league that isn't corrupt, you just have to be patient and if your gut says no, don't do it.

If you don't already, pay attention to the BOTH and Other League Forums to find out who commonly run/participate in leagues here and potentially get a jump on any openings. Many redraft leagues are taking headcounts and starting to fill openings already. I know there are openings in both the 32 Homer and 32 HomARRRRRRs league. The HomARRRRRRs even have the Eagles available currently.

Hey guys, because of exactly this problem and joining stranger leagues, I now commish my own stranger leagues on ESPN. I always use League Safe with the setting for majority vote approval. So managers all log in, can all see the money and the majority of the league has to vote to approve payouts. I do low level money $20 to $35 max so far. Good fun. Doing 6 leagues this year and am mostly full, but I have a few openings. If anyone wants to get on my email list or get more info, post or send me your email. I am not a scam and wont pester you. I am a solid average joe just like you who loves fantasy football. I have a great manager return rate, meaning owners stay in my leagues year after year. I dont put up with any bs, I end trading 3 weeks before playoffs and I leave all trades for the league to vote on. I dont do any favors or special treatment. A lot of hesitant guys join one of my leagues for a year at like $20 bucks and once they see it is legit and I am an honest commish, they come back and jump in more leagues the following year. I got more than a few dudes in multiple leagues. I do PPR leagues and mostly superflex leagues (option to start 2nd QB) but also have a couple normal flex. You can never be sure when it comes to strangers, but If you want to roll the dice and give it a shot, hit me up. I will send you more info.

iirc, $30 X 12. Bassturd

That is correct. It was after his construction business collapsed I believe. I was in that league.

Yahoo has 'pro leagues' where you can join for a specific amount and receive specific payouts. They handle the payouts. They also handle any problems that occur in the league, someone is dedicated to check any complaints out. Though my guess is for them its like Public Defenders, too many clients, not enough time, etc etc. Last year I accidentally traded Freeman for Peterson. Luckily Freeman during this period was outperformed by Peterson, but I did not want to do the trade at the time. I filed a complaint, but according to their rules I could not get enough people in the league to down vote the trade and the 'commissioner' assigned to our league would not change anything. The other person's team was of course an chalupa would not trade Freeman back.

HOWEVER everything else was great about it. Set the draft time/date you want, and one of the four options for entry fee. I'm probably going to do two leagues via their system.

I joined 2 this year but both are small money. I think I'd have to vet a little bit more if they larger bills were involved. With that being said, both of them are with league safe (specifically looked for that option....) so I feel a little better.
