ive always found the marinovich saga fascinating...I was born in 1980...so when marinvich was on the scene around 88-92 I was really getting heavy into following college and pro football

a lot of people wanna blame his father....everyone knows that whole story......but I think when you dig a little deeper by all accounts marinovich loved football and sports....I think it was more of a productive on an environment....the culture around him....I remember reading an esquire article on him where he said he was a freshman and the upper classmen were inviting him to keggers and whatnot after games and his father gave him permission ...its sort of a right of passage....think I even read a quote where his father said "you earned it"....also remember hearing something about his parents getting a divorce and him living with his father during his last two years of high school...and apparently his father was pretty loose with the rules at that point......im sure drinking and drugs started as a release from some of the pressure on him.....but it just spiraled.....if you've ever seen the HBO doc "trophy kids" you have some parents today who are probably just as bad.....I think the scene around marinovich really took hold of him though

Damn. I've followed his career real closely. Born a few years after him, local guy. All of his arrests have been in and around where I live.

MSN, not surprisingly, has it wrong, though... didn't really "star" at Mater Dei HS. He really got things going after he transferred to Capo Valley after his parents' divorce. His dad was loony toons. Treated his son like an "asset", putting him through crazy training/diets, even at like 10-11 years old.

Real sad. And honestly, fully expected to read that he was dead when I clicked the link.
