New CBA and Padded Practices

I know the players requested a limit on padded practices which I believe is detrimental to the team in keeping sharp but I understand they wanted protection against the ogre coaches that wanted to beat the crap out of them. However, if a team decides they need to sharpen themselves can they elect to pad up and go out and practice in pads voluntarily?

Many teams have exhausted their padded practice limit but with the playoffs just around the corner, it would seem a team may want to pad up and do some hitting as they try to sharpen themselves for the playoffs.

Anyone know if this happens or if it is possible?

This whole Padded practice limit is making the players soft if you ask me. I get limiting the ability for a rogue coach to push the team relentlessly but come on, you have to practice hitting and tackling to stay sharp don't you.

I'm not sure if it's making players soft, but I sure see alot more guys going for the "knockout" than I used to. Noone wraps up anymore

Is that really a new trend since the last CBA though? Seems like an ongoing thing for at least 5-10 years, they all want to be on ESPN highlights for delivering that brutal hit.

Hmm last CBA in 2011, so that would be 5 years, just seems it has been going on long before that.

REally, I don't see that at all. I see guys putting in shoulders for fear of their head leading or getting too close to the other guys helmet. I do see a lot more guys trying to knock the guy down rather then tackle the guy by wrapping up which is true but that is a result of the PF being called. I still don't see much in the form of protecting the middle of the field save for a few tough guys patrolling their territory. Even then they get more defenseless calls which hurts the team anyhow.

I still wonder if the players themselves can call a padded practice and do some real hitting prior to big game weeks.

Personally, I don't think any player would elect to throw on the pads if they didn't have to. Also, having played the game, albeit not on a major lvl, I didn't need the pads to keep me sharp, the lights go on and if you can play, you know just what to do.

Players can probably get together and do what they want, by themselves, without coaches, possibly other restrictions. But I doubt the players would do that. But the key is, do they feel they really need more padded practices at this point.

That started when ESPN started pimping guys that were bad at football so all they could do was torpedo someone.
