Sgt. Ryan
1. Why do these *** writers not vote what they see on the field, instead of some BS about what happened last year affect their opinion? No way 45 of 61 voters could honestly say if USC and OU lined up OU wouldnt kick their ass. My take is Vegas would have this game at OU -6, if this was played on a neutral field. Why are the writers so ignorant. Why did they give USC even a piece of LSU's title last yr. WHY? 2. Why is OS WHO still ranked. They lose to Northwestern and are 0-2 in conference. How many more loses is it going to take to kick that sad sack team out of the rankings. 3. Why are Sports writers so f'n stupid. What if Miami or Virgina, Auburn, Purdue or Wisconsin, OU and USC all win out. Auburn would have won the best conference in the country, so I think they should be in the NC game. That leave Miami, OU and USC for the final spot. Out of these 3 teams who looks the strongest, and plays the toughest schedule. OU looks the strongest, they and Miami play the toughest schedule. What would end this madness. Arz. St beating USC at home and showing the country this team has skated by too long. I'll have to put a lil pin in Leinharts knee and Bush's back on my VooDoo dolls this week, just to end part of this madness. Wisconsin plays Purdue next week, so that eliminates one of them. Miami plays Virgina, so that eliminates one of them. Leaving 5 teams in major conferences with a shot at going undefeated. USC needs to lose, because they dont deserve to be ranked ahead of Miami, OU or Auburn. If you just voted on what you have seen thus far, and actual intellect were used to decide, USC wouldnt be ranked any higher than 4th right now. Auburn may lose before its all said and done because the SEC is so strong. I just dont think Purdue and Wisconsin can run the table. One will lose next week, but the other is sure to lose imo. That leaves Miami and OU playing for all the marbles in the Miami Orange Bowl. Greatness
pokerboss
sounds about right sarge, great analysis. as for purdue/ wisconsin winner losing at some point......if it were to be purdue, they still gotta play michigan and ohio state.....although both are at home and both of those teams are having down yrs. that would be funny to see purdue run the table because they arent in the class of an OU or miamii......yet. Fury
The question is why do you keep talking about the writers? The writers gave USC 41 first-place votes and Oklahoma 23. The coaches gave USC 45 first-place votes and Oklahoma 15. The coaches voted USC No. 1 prior to the bowl games last year just like the writers and would have after the bowl games if not for an agreement with the BCS. The writers and coaches, long the deciders of national championships, both thought USC was the champion of the 2003-2004 season. The only reason LSU got a piece of the title is the BCS. And we know what everyone thinks of the BCS. Edited October 11, 2004 by Fury

Don't get too happy about your team until they can prove that they can win a big game. Texas doesn't count either. In fact, one dimensional teams are hardly a good barometer. I think OU has a very good team, but just as they blew out teams by 60 points last year they showed how easily that can all go away. USC is not as good as they were last year, but they know how to win games. They don't give up in games and they are never out of them. That is the heart of a champion. Maybe thats why the humans vote the way they do.
Coffeeman
First, we simply disagree about last year - USC not only deserved 1/2 of the NC, they deserved to face LSU (over OU) for the undisputed version, and I think they would've beaten them. But that was last year... Second, I have no problem if OU was #1 and USC was #2 right now. If both go undefeated, I believe they should meet in the Orange. It would take a miracle for the 'Canes to get there without a QB. (Do they have one? Oh, my bad - it seems like they don't...) And like you said, I don't see anyone going undefeated in the Lil'11 or the SEC. Third, Cal is very good - I would not be surprised to see them in the Rose Bowl, and winning it vs. Purdue or Wisc., should SC go to the Orange. Undefeated #15 AZ State is not bad either, with their pro prospect QB Walters, and they come to town next week. (But USC hasn't lost at home in 3 years - yes, Carroll/Chow are great coaches, and the voting coaches recognze that.) Like the Big12, the Pac10 has 3 good teams and the rest are mediocre or downright putrid, but that doesn't take away from the dominance (so far) of OU and USC. Finally, its still very early. Let's resume the discussion in mid-November, after our teams keep winning out. Hopefully ND and UCLA will keep winning and be good late tests for USC, and maybe OU will be tested at some point too. Then we'll have even more data to analyze to determine who we think is the best....
Fury
The USC-Cal game wouldn't have been close if not for two BS calls in the third quarter. First, there was a BS pass-interference penalty called in the end zone on USC linebacker Matt Grootegoed on a 3rd-and-goal for Cal on the USC 8. That led to a Cal touchdown. On the kickoff, Bush returned it 84 yards to the Cal 16. On 3rd-and-10, Leinart threw to Dwayne Jarrett who was butchered on the play. But no PI was called and the pass was intercepted. When Eric Wright returned the fumbled punt for a TD but it was called that you cannot advance a muffed punt recovery, that was also BS. Coffeeman
Nope, I'm not satisfied at all with our performance at only 205 f%*king yards. Is Cal's D really that good vs. the run? I will say again at this point, USC won ugly vs. a very good Cal team. The only good news - we've won 3 close ones now, so at least we have experience at that, and I feel we are ahead of where we were this time last year. But....we lost our new #1 WR, so it will be all youngsters from here on out, and we don't have the same athletes on the D or O line we had last year. And no neither Cal nor USC sucks - two good teams going at it. Should we say OU sucked by only getting 12 vs. TX? Why not 40, huh? Yep, OU and USC have taken major steps back since last year....yeah, right. I do not want to face OU right now, as they would probably beat us, and I'm glad we don't play bowl games until January. I have no doubt that we will get better. We have improved dramatically throughout the year in each of the last 3 years, so much so that no one could really hang with us in the bowl games. But the other teams get better each week too....

Vote Quimby2
Miami plays Virgina, so that eliminates one of them. 476601[/snapback] Virginia will get eliminated this week when they come on down to Doak.
PatrickL
I think through the first half of the season, the best three teams look like OU, AU and UVA. Now I think UVA CAN beat Miami, but that'll be a huge test. AU has a tough test against Georgia and Arkansas, not to mention the SECCG. If OU has an off week, some of the teams (namely the Cowboys and Aggies) could beat them. Mark it down, USC will stumble. I'll stand by my orange bowl prediction of Auburn vs Oklahoma. Imo, OU looks like the best team out there right now. I also don't see USC losing a game this season since their schedule is so soft(hopefully I'm wrong). I expect them and OU to play for it all and OU to win it.
